1800 watt UPSs are very expensive.
900 watt UPSs are not to bad.

Say you were running a rig on two 850 watt PSUs using an add2psu to trigger (and common ground?) them...

Is there any reason you couldn't run a pair of 900 watt UPSs to protect the rig - one on each PSU?

You can certainly use two PSU's if you hook them up properly.

As far as the UPS, IMO it's an unnecessary expense for a mining rig unless you are in an area with really bad power service. Just use a good power strip with surge protection and it should be fine. You can set the rig to restart automatically after a power loss in the Bios and use a bat file to start mining after Windows loads.

i live at 8000ft on the side of a mountain in Colorado.

We have lightening strikes and brown outs regularly (3 strikes on our mountain today in fact).
We run UPSs on EVERYTHING.

i just recently built a 7 card mining rig with dual 850 psu's - it is running great!
I am just trying to figure out the cheapest way to ups protect it.

cheers and thanks!

Are surge arresters enough for the bad power ?, and what if i have psu with over and under volt protection , do you have any experience with this?

I just have my own personal experience of not having any bad experiences from lost power, but I live in a big city. A UPS is essentially a surge protector with a battery back up in the event of a power loss. With a high draw most can't run on the battery for very long which is why I just use a power strip for some additional protection and have not had any problems.

If you experience actual power loss or brown outs to the point of electronics resetting (think blinking alarm clocks) then yeah you'd probably want/need a UPS, depending on the frequency and duration.

Although a UPS won't run a rig for any considerable amount of time (I have a largish APC on my primary desktop and get <5 minutes running only one 1080ti).  They would be good to avoid constant reboots, that said, if you only have one or two a day, doing as a previous poster suggested and just having them set to restore after power loss might be the better bet.

up here in the mountains we've had 'one phase brown outs' where literally half the power goes off and we have like 70volts coming down the line.

It wreaks havoc on fridges/freezers/well pumps, etc.   I am afraid what it might do to my mining rigs  Shocked

when running two psu's the general consensus is that you want to plug them into the same circuit so they have a common ground.  I guess my question boils down to "is having the two psu's on different ups's which then plug into the same circuit still enough of a common ground or are the two separate batteries in the circuit going to cause issues?"

I can buy 2 ups' for $250.
1 ups to do the same job is $750+

i don't care how long they run for - i just need it as a buffer for all the brownouts we have.
