Bitcoin-based lottery TrueFlip announced that its website was classified as prohibited in the Russian Federation. Although the website operators do not agree with this decision, TrueFlip complied with and blocked access to the website in the region. The project’s official statement reads:
Quote
TrueFlip complies with the law, and we will point that out to the public and the nation state. We have sent a letter to Roskomnadzor clarifying the faultiness of such interpretation as the law defines a lottery as one implying monetary or commodity-based winning. Officially, cryptocurrency is neither money, nor a commodity.

This sounds more like Russia is following Chinese and Northkoreans foot steps and Isolating their countries from outer world. Gone through article and found that they have even banned localbitcoins and Bitstamp, which is quite rediculous. But anybody who like to participate in this lottery can easily access site via TOR browser or VPN  Wink

Well for me Russia is really anti-bitcoin. They always changing themselves regarding bitcoin and crypto's. That's why I surmise that they are anti bitcoin country. It seems that they really contradicting itself and most likely they wont adopt bitcoin. Well its authoritarian nation, so what we should expect? So everything should be taken with a grain of salt coming from them.

Yeah so I wasn't surprised when I heard they have strangely banned true flip, Russia likes taking a stance opposite what the western world suggests and so it could be one of their communist inferior tactics.

No one will agree that they flout the law even if its so obvious but unfortunately no one goes against the government and win. Even though the law might be interpreted to the favour of the client, but what of the revenue that has been lost which might even not be regained again. This form of jealousy and change of policies overnight which I am sure TrueFlip would have done its assignment very well in relation to the legality of their form of business. But now they have to battle with that.

I don't get why governments block online gambling sites. If they are paying the proper taxes and abiding by the laws of the country, why not? Maybe these guys just wasn't able to pay off some people who were asking for some and now they got shit coming for them because of it. Politics and governments are really a hindrance to progress!

Once Russia banned the usage of bitcoin in the country and now it has come with plans to make its system function similar to bitcoin, also took back the ban. Using this as an opportunity more firms will try to popularize them with the name of bitcoin. Based on this it could have banned the lottery startup.

Hello, all! Yes, we have really received a warrant from the Russian web regulator Roskomnadzor stating that our lottery service breaks the Russian law as there’s a state monopoly on lotteries. The thing is that we actually don’t surpass any laws in Russia as Bitcoin’s still not considered as a currency, nor as a commodity by the countries law. Thus, we’ve decided to restrict access of Russian-based IPs to our web-page. At the same time our legal team has sent an answer to this warrant explaining our position. Though still no feedback received from the authorities (they have 30 calendar days for it). Yet we consider our position strong and look forward to the further development of this dialogue up to a lawsuit against the state agency. Still we hope that a simple VPN can solve such problems for TrueFlip loyal users.
