Ethereum DAG/VRAM question

Hi there, I once read that with mining Ethereum, eventually the DAG size would exceed the VRAM of 3GB video cards?

I also read at some point that the DAG is no longer stored in VRAM essentially fixing this future problem?


Can anyone set me straight? Will my 3GB mining farm eventually be obsoleted by massive DAG files?

What GPU are you mining with that has 3GB? The only one I can think of is the Tahiti (7970/280x) and with that GPU you shouldn't even be mining ETH due to the DAG thrashing bug.

 GTX 1060 has a 3GB option.
 7870 XT might have, as it was a cut-down Tahiti chip.

 I do agree that ETH is a bad choice on the Tahiti, it's a much better ZEC miner among other options.


 Yes, the DAG size on ETH will eventually exceed 3GB - and sometime around that time a 3GB card will no longer be able to mine ETH - as it DOES require the entire DAG file to me stored on the card to be able to mine at anything resembling a viable speed.

You already can't dual mine effectively with 3GB cards. Once the dag gets over 3GB you won't be able to mine ETH with 3GB cards and be also dual mine with 4GB cards.

I'm running 5 1060's right now. 3 of them are 3GB cards. I thought they were pretty decent at Eth right now. 30-40 day ROI effectively on the 190$ cards. Score around 20Mh/s assuming around 120 watts a card. Oh, and you can actually buy them haha.


I guess ill just unload the 3gb versions when they cant mine anymore?

Also my 3Gb Tahiti is a 7950. Gets about 11.5mh/s right now. Havent looked into Z at all. Worth it with a 7950?

To add to the above data supplied by these gentlemen, around time that Claymore had published his best ZEC miner my ASUS 7970 DCII was getting around 15Mh/s on ETH but mining ZEC it was 300+. Moneywise it's no contest.

One other thing that your googling skills failed to turn up is that for especially old cards, mining ZEC consumes less power than ETH. So even more money is being made.

If you are getting 180 h/s you most likely are referring to a 7870 or you need to overclock your 7950.

It seems many people are having issues modifying their straps with older GPUs using Hex Editor. I literally had about 50-60 PMs people BEGGING for me to modify their bios. I stopped doing it because it was time consuming. I will post the GPUs I currently have which I am using.


I am getting very close to 300 Sol/s on each of my 7950 / 7970 / 280x using these straps with Claymore 11 .
I am getting very close to 350Sol/s on each of my Reference R9 290 (1100/1450) using STILT BIOS mods with Claymore 11.


Just flash these straps at your own risk, if you have no idea what you are doing, then leave this thread now. I assume NO RESPONSIBILITY if you brick your GPU, messed up your memory chips, etc. YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT MEMORY. ELPIDA WONT WORK WITH HYNIX STRAPS.

You don't even need to flash your bios. He should get at least 250-260 h/s with the stock bios. I am thinking he is using an older version of ZEC miner.

This is possible. If i can pull anywhere near 300 ill switch it over right now. Any idea how 1060's can do?

No iv'e not purchased my account lmao. Like i said ive been out of eth for over a year and out of btc for at least 2-3 years. Only thing i played with before that was litecoin. But yeah, ive been pretty far removed as of late. Ill look for his threads tho.

After all, once these 3gb cards can no longer mine eth id rather switch to another coin over selling them. Unfortunately 80Mh/s of my setup are 3gb cards.
