Yes, you must be synced with the network to receive recent transactions.

Yes, you must be synced with the network to receive recent transactions. You do not have to be synced to receive BitCoin payment, you have to be synced to see the transaction. Each time you fire up that wallet you will have to sync. If you haven't used it in over a week, you will have lots of blocks to download.

The blockchain is getting really big and it takes like a whole day now to download it. I think the size could become a problem in the future.

New strategies will emerge to deal with it. Blockchain pruning, super nodes/light nodes etc.

This was my biggest problem with bitcoin-qt -- and why I didn't get into it 6 months ago. It took days (literally) to complete, and never did. I finally gave up and figure this shit would never work. Then someone told me about multibit a few months later...and I discovered coinbase. I have since stopped using coinbase, infavor of multibit.

It can be trimmed though.

If you don't want to wait for the entire blockchain to sync, you can use a client like Electrum which takes far less time and less space on your hard drive.

my first sync on my desktop with a 30mbps connection took 2 days to complete.
My server running bitcoind took 2 days to complete at a full 100mbps...
Ultimately it seems that it is dependent on the specs of the machine and how fast it can traverse through the blockchain resource wise, not network wise.
