I think think the probably is already there. Bitcoin's main issue right now is the high transaction fee's. We have seen countless thread saying that the bitcoin fee is too high. So I think this will be the deciding factor for some casual investors like us. If the issue will not be resolved, I guessing that ETH will surpass bitcoin and become the no. 1 currency. I hope I'm wrong.

Who cares? Bitcoin and Ethereum do not compete (except in the minds of morons).

It's like asking, "Will Honda surpass Kraft?"

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

Bitcoin's main problem at the moment is the huge amount of fees it charges for a transaction, but that will come to an end with the Segwit2x. After that it will be unclear for everyone to determine which coin comes on top. I'd bet that ETH might surpass BTC as it is already close to doing so according to http://www.flippening.watch/ but I expect also BTC/BTU to recover soon after.

I think in the near term Ether will surpass bitcoin in the near term, but in the long term its not so easy to predict.

Bitcoin could potentially adopt scaling solutions in the next months and it could potentially also get an accepted US ETF in the future. Even if bitcoin falls to second place soon these factors will lead to big spikes in its price and bring it back on top. Looking further ahead than that though I could potentially see Ether or another altcoin winning out if it truly offers better value to its users.

Surpass in what? In price, no way! In total market capitalization, this is possible. In total supply, already passed...

It does look as if it could with all the recent events which has befallen bitcoin all at once recently.
Coinbase, China miners, China exchanges, Governments around the globe going against it and in retaliation siding with ethereum and looking at Viatlik's tech instead. Undecided

On the contrary, I don't think ETH can surpassed bitcoin in terms of trading volume or market cap. Although I must admit that ETH has gaining grounds and the dominant that bitcoin has before diminishing, I don't think ETH has too much to offered though. It is only temporarily and bitcoin will again rise from the occasion when the all the bumps and hindrances has been fix in the future(high tx fees)

Probably? No. If fees is the only concerned then it might not the factor for Etherium to surpass bitcoin. No way majority of people will use another cryptocurrency for usage purposes. Remember that bitcoin is used now to the things that a currency does like. For Etherium to become no. 1 cryptocurrency, it must surpass what bitcoin does today. Today, Etherium is only hype just to make money.

I have Etherium too in my portfolio as part of my coins to be hold for long term but that's only for that and not as hoping that Etherium will paseed Bitcoin.

Agree but in the short term it's quite possible that ETH will surpass bitcoin in terms of growth but that also comes with a lot of volatility, even more than bitcoin's

One thing I want to tell because of this Bitcoin the ETH is growing so fast. To see bitcoins, the ETH developers are improving the technology and making that coin popular in the market. But right now I think the ETH price will depend on Bitcoin. If the BTC go down then automatically the ETH price also go down. There is no doubt that ETH will never surpass Bitcoin.

As one of the mate quoted, where ethereum is used for. The usage of bitcoin and the acceptance in several forms of investment to business and other related activities were found high with bitcoin compared to ethereum and other altcoins which were purely used for trading purpose.

I think it's prudent to own some ETH just in case. Whether it will surpass Bitcoin or not is not so important to me.
About the utility. Well there are some big guns signed up for the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance so ETH (probably) has the potential to evolve into something big in the near future. Sit tight, hold some ETH coins and wait for the big picture to unravel  Wink

Surpass in what?
My thoughts exactly

In price, no way! In total market capitalization, this is possible. In total supply, already passed...
Its not impossible for ether to have a higher price value but for the time being ETH will remain second best.

Bitcoin total market cap will be surpassed any day now because of the increased smart contract based projects.

Dont panic, its just a hype for the coin or some groups against bitcoin pumping ethereum, or maybe switching to ethereum and will be back after the issue of segwit.

It's like asking, "Will Honda surpass Kraft?"

Honda > kraft. 100% for sure. Way more useful.

Nah but seriously ethereum is just a pump and dump for morons that missed out on bitcoins and dont understand that it's not worth 30 BILLION dollars!!!

Due to the transaction of the bitcoin is getting increasingly painful specially for small transaction i think etherum have possibilty to surpass bitcoin at least untill this scaling issue is resolved. i'm not a big fan of the etherum but i must confess that transaction with etherum is simpler, faster and the fee are also cheap. In the other hand its smart contract capability it is usually the first platform that company go to.

What is your real question, will ether surpass bitcoin under what circumstances .If you are looking at the price then there wont be any chance in the near future ,if you are talking about the number of projects started with ETH,then it might and ether is used only for creating these sort of projects and it cannot be considered as a currency,so bitcoin tops everywhere.
