I originally made a topic with the same subject on the Newbies forum, but the comments weren't so favorable, and it doesn't look like anyone downloaded the books.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=192039

People take works that have fallen out of copyright and sell them, like old movies, William Shakespeare's plays, and so on, so I decided to do something similar.

I took a bunch of public domain books I found on the internet, concealed their titles to make them surprise books, and uploaded them onto CoinUploads. You pay 2 dollars worth of Bitcoins for each book. You don't get any money in return, but the concept is, if you discover a book that enjoyable for you, you win a bet, whereas if you discover a book that's not enjoyable, you lose a bet.

A version of a public domain work can be copyrighted, but I never uploaded any books from any organization that said their versions of public domain books were copyrighted.

I tried to have books that represent at least a fairly wide range of interests and have more obscure books, so it's likely you'll discover a book you never heard of. All books are in PDF format.

Is anyone willing to play this game? I would prefer that you do not reveal the names of the books, but otherwise, let me know what you think.

For it's own sake, here's another topic where I discussed my gambling business.

Unique idea, but I doubt it'll fly. $2 is imo way too much for something that is in public domain and digital. If you were to donate the money to charity, I'd consider buying/donating.
Nice thinking outside of the box though. Good luck  Smiley

IMO put this in "goods" or another marketplace category, as it's certainly not gambling, it's just buying a random public domain book for ~$2 USD worth of btc.

IMO make the cost extremely small, like a few $.03 when delimited in USD, and make the library huge, and you may have something.

also why not charge 10x to buy the exact title you want?

CoinUploads is a file hosting service, like MediaFire and RapidShare, and you set a fixed price for the file you upload, so I don't think I can charge 10 times the normal price. Here's the main site.
http://www.coinuploads.com/

I looked up the definition of "gambling," and this is what I got on The Free Dictionary.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gambling

a. To bet on an uncertain outcome, as of a contest.
b. To play a game of chance for stakes.
2. To take a risk in the hope of gaining an advantage or a benefit.

Also, the board description says "Gambling and all "investments" that are so risky they might as well be gambling." Maybe my "business" is not all that risky, but I think it still fits the definition of the term "gambling." I also put it on Gambling to try to emphasize that there's a "game" aspect to it.

There's millions of public domain books out there, and it's probably impossible to know about millions of anything. So you'll likely find books that you would never have known about otherwise. It might be a book you wouldn't normally give much attention to otherwise, but maybe in the best case, you're pleasantly surprised at the information you didn't know would be interesting to you.

Paying 2 dollars and seeing what the book is and has in it, would that be fun? Should I give you hints as to what the books are?

Are you people here rich? In terms of dollars, how much money do you have? If you're not rich, do you know of anywhere where there's rich people?

This is just silly.

Who would pay 2 bucks for what is already to be had for free...?

It's not like there isn't a huge ocean of text content out there already...

There's a very easy way to turn this into a full gambling business, watermark some of the books with "winner" and some with "loser" the winner's win $2.50 in BTC and the losers just get the book.

I'm really kidding but trying to make the OP topic relevant
