First, sorry- I know this topic has been discussed multiple times.  However, I've read through and tried most of the previous suggestions with no luck, so hoping someone can point out something I'm missing.

I have a wallet that I created in January.  I've lost the password.  I have the seed.

When I restore, both from the current version and from older versions, the new wallet is empty.

My seed is a 12 word seed and I know that it was created on jan 05, 2017 (because I took a screenshot of the seed, and the jpg was created that date)

So far, I've tried restoring using a few different versions to no avail.

Any ideas on what I should try?  Sorry for being a complete noob with this.  Was moving from BTQT to Electrum for security, but apparently I used a new password, thinking if I lost it, I could just restore with the seed.  I didn't contemplate it being such a hassle.

Does the new wallet have different addresses to the old wallet?

Did you click the options button when creating your seed and use any of the advanced features?

The options are extending the seed with custom words, and making a BIP 39 seed.

Additionally, if you know one of the addresses that should be in the wallet, try going to the console of Electrum and typing
Code:
ismine("ADDRESS")

This will show if the address exists in this wallet. If it says true, there are other possible reasons you might not be seeing your coins such as the gap limit.

Thanks for the response.  Comes back as false.  I'm completely baffled on how the seed could be wrong because the dates all match up, but it looks like it's wrong :-(

Did you extend the seed with custom words? If you click on options during the seed entry phase of the wallet restore process you have the option to extend the seed with custom words. If you used that option originally you have to use it again and then provide the same custom words/characters when prompted for them by electrum.

Also don't use different versions of electrum. Use the latest version 3.0.3. Electrum maintains backwards compatibility with all old seed mnemonics so always use the latest version.

I wonder if it is possible, that when you originally set it up, you went to the seed entry screen and then clicked "back" to go back to the seed display screen... when you do this, it will generate a new seed!

So if you had taken a screenshot, then clicked next... then clicked back to look at the seed again... it would have generated a new seed different from your screenshot.

If that's what happened then when he re-enters the seed to verify it Electrum would reject that.

Assuming he then tried typing in the seed from the screenshot and didn't just re-enter the newly displayed seed without realising it was different...

Anyway, if he has a screenshot of the seed, then there really isn't a way for him to have created a "different" wallet using the seed from the screenshot... so it would appear that the only logical explanation is that all this time, the user has been using a completely different wallet with a different seed (possibly one that already existed on their computer) without realising it.

Pretty sure this is correct.  Makes sense now.  Going to try to brute force the PW and hope I remember enough of it to be able to brute force it.
