The U.S. military on Sunday shot down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet that bombed local forces aligned with the Americans in the fight against Islamic State militants, an action that appeared to mark a new escalation of the conflict.

The U.S. had not shot down a Syrian regime aircraft before Sunday's confrontation, said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman. While the U.S. has said since it began recruiting, training and advising what it calls moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight IS that it would protect them from potential Syrian government retribution, this was the first time it resorted to engaging in air-to-air combat to make good on that promise.

The U.S.-led coalition headquarters in Iraq said in a written statement that a U.S. F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian government SU-22 after it dropped bombs near the U.S. partner forces, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The shootdown was near Tabqa, a Syrian town in an area that has been a weekslong focus of fighting against IS militants by the SDF as they surround the city of Raqqa and attempt to retake it from IS.

The U.S. military statement said it acted in "collective self defence" of its partner forces and that the U.S. did not seek a fight with the Syrian government or its Russian supporters.

According to a statement from the Pentagon, pro-Syrian regime forces attacked the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces-held town of Ja'Din, south of Tabqah in northern Syria, wounding a number of SDF fighters and driving the SDF from the town.

Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the town, the Pentagon said. Following the pro-Syrian forces attack, the coalition called its Russian counterparts "to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing," according to the statement.

A few hours later, the Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF fighters and, "in collective self-defence of coalition-partnered forces," was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet, the Pentagon said.

"The coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria," the Pentagon said, using an abbreviation for the Islamic State group. "The coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend coalition or partner forces from any threat. "

U.S. forces tangled earlier this month with Syria-allied aircraft in the region. On June 8, U.S. officials reported that a drone likely connected to Iranian-supported Hezbollah forces fired on U.S.-backed troops and was shot down by an American fighter jet. The incident took place in southern Syria near a base where the U.S.-led coalition was training Syrian rebels fighting the Islamic State group.

An Army spokesman at the Pentagon said at the time that the drone carried more weapons and was considered a direct threat, prompting the shootdown.

So..

What concerns me is this is an escalation of the proxy war.. USA vs Russia. (fought in Syria)

This is a funny situation, US have occupied part of Syria, and for pretext of defending Kurdish separatists Military forces bomb Syrian Army and have downing the Aircraft.

What they tell about Donbass & Crimea?
Something, that is bad to occupy foreign country, and other shit about integrity of Territory?

This episode is a fail of actual structure for Security Zones in Syria.

This is a old aircraft, that have bombed ISIS targets.

Quote
Damascus, SANA-The Army general command announced on Sunday that the air force of the so-called “international coalition” targeted one of the army’s warplanes in al-Rasafah region in Raqqa southern countryside while it was carrying out a combatant mission against ISIS terrorist organization, causing it to down and missing its pilot.

The General command said in a statement that the flagrant aggression undoubtedly affirms the US real stance in support of terrorism which aims to affect the capability of the Syrian Arab army- the only active force- along with its allies that practice its legitimate right in combating terrorism all over Syria.

“The attack stresses coordination between the US and ISIS, and it reveals the evil intentions of the US in administrating terrorism and investing it to pass the US-Zionist project in the region.” The statement added.

It affirmed that such aggressions would not affect the Syrian Arab army in its determination to continue the fight against ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations and to restore security and stability to all Syrian territories.

It reminds me off how the USA helped Bin Laden to fight the Russians in Afghanistan way back.

Or Russia helping the North Koreans during the Korean War.

Not sure i have any suggestions.
Be nice if we learned to get along with out violence though.

At the end of the day we have a Syrian pilot dead just because he was doing his job.

Yes it seems so, it seems world war will soon rage. It seems that usage vs. russi will be the factor, when viewed from their allies.
It seems that they will soon start a war in the near future. These two countries are very powerful in the army of war, and they have advanced tools

The "soviet" colours of Russia are existing not more.
The actual Russia is sold to Rotshilds.

What we have now is the same war of Rockfeller against Rotshild.

Instead of uniting and defeating the IS IS threat, the US is determined to cause more chaos in the already fragile region all because they want to depose ASSAD which is hypocritical when you look at the human rights record of their ally Saudi Arabia.

Who gave Americans the permission to use Syrian Airspace? And they went even further, by shooting down Syrian fighter jets. And see how ironic this is, given the fact that these fighter jets were targeting the ISIS-controlled territory. The Americans are indirectly supporting the ISIS, and this is not the first time they are doing it (remember the Deir Ezzor bombing which killed more than 100 Syrian soldiers?)

I don't know why this stupid Americans are targeting the wrong people, again and again. The SAA is the most important fighting force currently engaged against the ISIS. The Americans claim that they are fighting the ISIS, but at the same time they are helping them by removing their rivals (the SAA) and providing them with weapons (through the FSA).

I am first in line to bad mouth the US govt ALWAYS.
And what they did was best i can tell bad too escalating things.

But should they just exit ?

Problem is they are balls deep meddling with all kinds of foreign wars raging with so called Terrorists.
Many groups ask them for help too.

And when Terrorists attack Americans i am not surprised they fight back.
But i also view 911 as a retaliation for trying to assassinate Bin Laden for damn near 20 years over & over.

So i am saying i don't know.
It's an unfortunate and ugly complicated mess.
As long as Terrorist acts keep happening i guess we will see others join in and pick a side.

This type of News story has been chipping away at the reputation of the US military too.
I think their foreign involvement in a way fuels more terrorism.
They get seen as bullies who swoop in and impose their different beliefs etc on others.
Then the others start a lot of nasty shit and it all gets worse & worse.

I also doubt RUS will fight with the USA.. directly.
Historically they do it via proxy using other nations as puppets.
So i doubt we will see World War 3 out of all this.
Just small countries used as pawns for ages with lots more blood shed.

It's even funny how you are outraged. And who do Americans have to ask permission? You are able to stop them? Lol. To remove the Americans from Syria only after the country abandoned Russian. It will mean the end for Assad.

The US are currently concentrating air forces around Syria in probable preparation of the conflict going hot in the air after the Russians said they'll treat US planes as hostile.

The Russians however don't actually need to scramble fighters against the Americans. As far as I know they have some S400 AA missile complexes in Syria ATM, which would be more than enough to take down some US plane and create a huge diplomatic crisis.

The downed aircraft was an SU-22 fighter bomber. While a relatively good aircraft and pretty fitting for taking out rebels and terrorists in ground attack missions, I doubt it can be a real threat to an F-18 since they claimed that the plane was shot in self defense?!

These two countries both Russia and United States have actually created more problem than the solution they tend to provide because for crying out loud it was never their fight  to begin with but now it has escalated to a point where innocent civilians have become casualties without any aggression whatsoever. Either way, hopefully both countries can sort their differences and leave Syria alone to handle it's issue.

You mean that Americans would not shoot down FOREIGN military jets, that are in United States air space without UN approval?

Please, tell me, what should Syrians do exactly? Sit idly and die under guided missiles for their own good?

I have problem with the fact, that you say Syrians "would create crisis" by the fact, that they defend their own country. United States are in this case the agressor. Internatinal law clearly bans any such actions on soil of foreign countries.

@Okurkabinladin

Which is why the UN denied the American request from G. W. Bush to invade Iraq.
They did it anyway though didn't they ?

But the F18/E Super Hornet is a good jet even now.
We have those as our main fighter in Canada and i've seen them training over my head lots.
I also have looked them up online.
They are a refined / upgraded and modernized version of the original F18.
A highly capable fighting jet still in 2017.
If i recall correctly they are a bit longer with a wider wing span and with upgraded electronics and guidance weapons systems.

Syria is a sovereign nation and the Americans must respect its borders. If they want to operate in Syria, then they should get permission from the Syrian government. Russia has acquired such permission for its operations there.

That is my local city news web page in Canada.
Story was spread around by the "Canadian Press"

Quote
The U.S. military on Sunday shot down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet that bombed local forces aligned with the Americans in the fight against Islamic State militants, an action that appeared to mark a new escalation of the conflict.

The U.S. had not shot down a Syrian regime aircraft before Sunday's confrontation, said Navy Capt.

Thoughts ?

Droning the home the syrian pilots, and wiping his tree lines from grand parents down. To teach them once and for all, move. Against animals, drone wild!

For a second move, elminating all fanilies of allies of russia. You want to play the putin bluff you get dead, will see how those little larvaes will fret once the program start in earnest.

They believe the west is some kind of old tranny... it's so easy to take the upper hand in viciousness when backed by 650billions official budget annually...
