If you are going long, like 5 years long.. then my picks would be;

1)Unobtanium - small total coin circulation and it will take 200 years for all unobtanium to be mined, their goal was to get to a price of around $200,000 USD I believe. They label themselves as the Platinum to Bitcoins gold

2)Antshares(Neo) - The Chinese Ethereum, just getting started but already looks a million times better than Ethereum does.

3)Nexus - Goal is to decentralize not just the internet but the world - has already launched rockets into space and is very promising

4)Humaniq - Just moved to the silicon valley and has a very big project in helping those less fortunate in Africa and other places

5)Quantum Resistant Ledger - As binary code hits the dark ages, quantum computing is becoming more and more mainstream with google already making a 49 qubit chip. Quantum Resistant Ledger are one of only a few who are already able to provide support in preventing attacks on this type of computing.

All I can say is whatever you choose to hold make sure you do hold for the full 5 years and dont go panick selling and chopping and changing if your coins are making a loss to start with

Just quoting your post, because it's rare to see a newbie post that post some valuable info, not just random crypto name and no reason why.

There are only 2 that I'd be confident enough about to leave untouched for 5 years, ETH and XRP.

4. MNE (minereum) - The self-mining aspect of this coin is interesting to me.
Is there any other coin with more multiaccounts than Minereum? Basically you are paying real money for a coin, Joe and his 5 sockpuppets get them for free and will get them for another 40 years.

If you could pick 5 coins to invest 1 grand each for 5 years which ones would you pick?

1 - Bitcoin, because bitcoin is the main stone of the cryptocurrencies. And there is a strong claim that it will be really up. And also from the beginning of the history of it, it is getting stronger year by year.

2- Waves, waves emerged with a different motto. They are making really nice moves. And i think it's value is not what it deserves now. Also, on their platform you can see some other investment options like MobileGo. By the way, maybe you can see from the forum that there is a really strong belief that it will be $100 in maybe one year.

These are my personal thoughts.

Bitcoin
Ethereum Classic
Monero

I'd divide between those 3 with weight to bitcoin. Maybe some Cloakcoin and Namecoin too.

ARK for obvious reasons like: Its new, already in top 50, same coin supply as ETH but costs a fraction of it, smart bridges.... Have you seen the wallet yet? It speaks for itself really. Besides DPOS is GREAT! Research it if you want. It's basically POS but without the need to have your wallet turned on all the time Smiley
BTC
Minereum (Gonna be HUGE)
Dash (Low coin supply)
Steem (kind or risky, but could take off like the next Facebook some day)

1. BTC. Safe bet.
2. ETH. Safe-ish bet.
3. WAVES. Undervalued. Potential.
4. XRP. If currency tunnels come to fruition, it's a big score. The tech is solid.
5. GRC. Gridcoin is one of the few coins doing something good NOW. Just needs more adoption. I'm a believer.
