I found this auction for 6 new r9 290's on ebay. I have been considering getting into mining for a few months now and have the extra money from selling my last project. Having a matching set of GPUs sounds very appealing, as then I can flash them all together, and they will all run within a reasonable tolerance of each other's settings. It just sounds like the simplest way to go for a first time rig. Just curious what the community thinks before I pull the trigger.

Not if you are considering mining eth. If you are trying to mine eth, you are kinda late to the game, the difficulty is only going to increase from here out. Do some research on what is mining outside of amd at the moment. Also this is for sure the wrong section. Check out the mining section of alternate cryptocurrencies here on the forum.

I will probably mine some ETH, but am interested in keeping the rig running for the long haul, jumping to whatever currency interests me most. From what I have read these cards have the recommended 4GB of memory and hefty hash rates. Even the 4xx, 5xx, or 10xx cards are only marginally better. I think I'm going to put a bid in for what I'm willing to spend and just see where it goes!

What are your electrical rate ? Because 290 cards are very electricity-consuming, so if you live in Europe do not buy them and just take 1060s, they would cost the same, consume half of the electricity and have the same hashrate in Ethereum and will of course be better in ZCash and the likes, way better for Nvidia.
