CPU vs GPU for mining.
Which would be better choice, a Ryzen 5/7 or rx 4xx/5xx, for cryptocurrency (Monero/Zcash/bitcoin...) mining?

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Why not both? The GPU needs a CPU to host it so make it a Ryzen.

BAD advice. Nvidia cards do not excel in mining Monero as compared to AMD cards. Generally, AMD is for Monero/Cryptonight while Nvidia is for Zcash/Equihash. Any decent miner should know how much better AMD is for mining monero.

Anyway to answer OP's question, go for the GPU mining. Mining with your CPU is less profitable because of the lower hashrates, higher cost of hardware, and inefficient power consumption. GPUs on the other hand, have been constantly fine tuned for doing exactly what the CPU is not powerful or efficient enough to handle. GPU mining all the way.

I agree that you should go for both. Gotta put something in that spot on the mobo regardless, why not make it as useful as possible for what you're doing. Of course, I say this after I went low on CPU power for my first rig. Been wishing I'd gone w/ a Ryzen instead...

The GTX 750 ti was a good Monero mining card, but the rest of the NVidia line is overpriced for their performance on that coin.
(possible exception for the 1050 / 1050 ti).

CPU mining on Monero is perfectly practical, but you will generally get better returns putting the money into a GPU to mine with - and you can easily put more than one GPU in most machines, multi-CPU Ryzen motherboards don't seem to exist (yet?).

CPUs seem to get the best Monero hashrate if you set them up for 1 thread per 2MB of cache on the CPU.

GPUs - vary widely depending mostly on the model of the GPU.
