I'm using cgminer to hit p2pool.org for FeatherCoin mining.  It shows 13Mh/s but in two hours I haven't had any shares accepted.  At the same time I'm running feathercoin-qt and it's showing 20kh/s but I've had 20 accepted shares in the same amount of time.

My assumption here is that cgminer is using GPU and feathercoin-qt is using CPU.  Am I misunderstanding?

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

Are you running cgminer with the --scrypt option?

I wasn't but now that I am, I get Error -1001: clGetPlatformsIDs failed (no OpenCL SDK installed?) clDevicesNum returned error, no GPUs usable No devices detected! Network Diff set to 12.3M.

I guess that's what I should expect with a Nvidia FX 1800.  I was hopeful before.  I'll just have to wait for the 7970 to come.

Yeah, honestly it's not even worth your while unless you have an AMD card.

Also, if you're mining a coin which uses scrypt, your rate should be in the KH/s instead of MH/s.

Switched to a 7970 but I still have something wrong.  I'm seeing network diff of 12.5M and hash rate of 7kh/s.

you might want to try cudaminer on that fx1800, i can't imagine it pulling any decent hashrate but >0 at least.

Post your settings and we'll see if we can get it working for you.

After some searches I came up with the following.  Getting about 360Kh/s.  Diff still shows 12.5M.  Is that bad?

cgminer -o http://p2pool.org:9377 -u user -p pass --scrypt --intensity 15 -g 1 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8192 --gpu-engine 1000 --gpu-memclock 1350

Don't worry about the difficulty. Your hashrate is still pretty low for a 7970, even at intensity 15. Check here for some potential settings.
