Good question!
It's important to understand some fundamental differences between VPN and Proxies and SOCKS Proxies.
VPN builds a secure tunnel using different protocols (PPTP, IPSec, IKEv2, SSTP etc..) between your machine and your desired destination/location on the internet and uses encryption to encrypt all the traffic passing through its servers. A good advantage also is that, all the traffic on your machine is routed via this tunnel (browser traffic, as any software running, e.g Torrent software etc..).
It hides you identity, YES but it makes CLEAR that your identity is hided.
How? It shows the Protocol used and mostly all those servers are listed in a database. Therefore using for example Google with VPN, you will get always Captcha to enter...
But it does not end there, if your DNS is not set properly, it's very easy to know that you are using a VPN (aka DNS Leak).

Now let's talk about Proxy. a Proxy is simply a server through with internet traffic is directed. Think of it as a gateway. Mainly reason people will use a proxy, is that the proxy will mask your real IP from sites you visit, letting you act/appear as that machine.
However, there are many types of proxies (exactly said 3 types), some, like VPN, will also make clear you are using a Proxy. Only private, clean and Elite Proxies will let you be fully anonymous, and that's what you need based on what you wrote here.
