I think there is a direct dependence on the fee for the transaction. It can hang indefinitely, if the fee is too small.

Similar to tcp/ip packet TTL I guess ( Time to live - TTL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_to_live)

Quote
As of Bitcoin Core 0.14.0, these are the ways a transaction can leave the mempool:

The transaction was included in a block.

The transaction or one of its unconfirmed ancestors conflicts with a transaction that was included in a block.

The transaction was replaced by a newer version (see BIP 125).

The transaction was at the bottom of the mempool (when sorted by fee per size), the mempool had reached its size limit (see the -maxmempool option), and a new higher-fee transaction was accepted, evicting the bottom.

The transaction expired by timeout (by default 14 days after entering).

Also, transactions that have left the mempool can always enter them again. For example, when they're part of the local wallet and get rebroadcast, or when they're received again over the network. Eviction does not imply a transaction is cancelled.
Since Bitcoin Core 0.14.0, the mempool is saved to disk, so it persists across restarts. In earlier versions a restart would also result in a wiped mempool.

I have seen 2-3 days maximum but for 14 days I havent seen any yet.

It really sucks seeing your transaction being unconfirmed for a long time especially if we are in hurry! But after few free bitcoin transaction accelerators, the problem and worrying about unconfirmed transactions are almost getting eliminated for  most of bitcoiners here. We are able to accelerate our transactions to get quick confirmations even accidentally we have included lower transaction fees.

They should live like for 3days max if I remember correctly, but again the question is will the transaction be rebroadcast-ed? Because if it is rebroadcasting itself then most likely it can be unconfirmed for a long periods of time, can be even infinity if we want to make it that way, we can.

Jesus Christ these are all spam transactions that you have linked up all of 1 satoshi... no wonder why we have to many transactions and why the network is jamed.... I have seen these spam transactions with higher send units but not 1 satoshi....

The correct answer is forever, or until a miner picks them up or become invalid Wink

Edit: Example o a miner picking up weird tx: https://blockchain.info/tx/bb41a757f405890fb0f5856228e23b715702d714d59bf2b1feb70d8b2b4e3e08 (999657 (bytes) in block 364292 containing only this tx and coinbase tx)

If you doing the transaction for the first time, make sure to do the transaction only after confirmation.
if not for the first time please confirm from the sender to resend with a free. actually it will be for max 5 days.

This particular transaction was not picked form the network.
It was created by f2pool admin with his private tools directly on pool node.
