powering the risers safely..info needed

so there is a lot of data out there, and a lot of mining rig owners have setups done possibly incorrect. what i am looking for is a clear answer to this very simple question:
What is the safest way to power the risers? What cables/adapter cables should we use?

i have read multiple times that using SATA to molex is a fire hazard:



i have read multiple times that SATA to 6pin is a hazard and i have read a lot that users say it is ok to use:



i have read that the PCI Riser that has the SATA connector on the board should be avoided:


i have read multiple times that the only plug should be the one from the PSU and go directly into the riser, not using the adapter cable option and trashing it. AND that plug/adapter going from the PSU to the riser should be the 4 pin molex end.

All I would love to know is what riser is safe to use? What cable is safe to use?

If the suggested way to power the risers is to go from PSU, using the cable that came with the PSU, to molex then what PSU brand and power limit has enough cables for molex to power 6 GPUS? there are a lot more SATA cables then there are Molex now.

How are you guys powering the risers you are using? What is the safest or suggested way to power the risers?

I use 6-pin PCI-E risers. Three thicker wires that are designed to spread a higher 12V load instead of two used by molex and sata connectors. The 6-pin risers also use four capacitors for a more stable current flow compared to the three used by the molex and sata risers. The good ones also come with a voltage regulator to prevent spikes. I also see there are new 6-pin risers that have 6 capacitors.

It's also possible to power 6-pin risers using a double Sata to 6-pin connector. Powered risers use ~50W each, so using two Sata connectors which are rated to 54W each is a safe way to power risers.

Just remember to never power more than two risers per SATA or 4-pin Molex PSU cable MAX. Using more more than that, you are overloading the rail and can damage the PSU, cables, connectors or all of them.

I think what alot of people are doing is not wanting to use as many cables as possible on their modular PSU.  So they hook up 3 risers to a single PSU cable (sata, sata, molex) and then the other 3 to another cable.  Whereas you can split two risers between three PSU cables instead...

It's a 6+2 PCI-e connector, so you can use it as a 6 pin or an 8 pin connector. You should NEVER use more than two risers per PSU cable when powering risers from SATA or molex PSU cables.

I use a server power supply like this to power the cards and the risers for up to 8 cards.

Then I use a ~400w PSU for the motherboard and SSD.

You also want to use PCIe 6 pin powered risers, like this:

Then use a GPU power splitter like this to power both the card and the riser:

This is currently one of the safest way to power risers.

the saftey problems with sata are because people are idiots and plug 4 gpu's onto 1 sata strand...  these same idiots were doing it just fine with molex but that was boarderline firehazard, the only reason why there wasnt a big deal with it is because molex has thicker cables.

Do not plug in more then 2 gpus per sata strand coming from ur PSU. Problem solved.

Don't have enough strands from psu? Start converting some of the other strands, Molex -> sata, PCIE -> sata... etc
Also don't forget these gpus were ment to be powered by the mobo. You can power TWO gpus safely from the mobo using UNPOWERED risers just fine! Then just have the rest using the regular powered ones.

i just had 1 sata to molex melt on a single line with nothing else coming off it , and the riser was only running a single UNDERvolted 460 50w draw on psu

i pull 10k damage on 264 r9 270 and nothing happens for 6 years now kid.
