I have taken action and made a "savings account" on a newly formatted laptop with ubuntu installed.I transferred some bitcoins from my original wallet to my new savings account wallet about 20 minutes ago, but have yet to see anything appear in my savings wallet. The transaction now has 6 confirmations and it's sent to the right address.

Are the bitcoins lost?

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Please, just read the wiki for an answer. This has been answered a million times. The bitcoin client will have to catch upt to the current block number, which is ~130000. So just wait, let your computer download the blocks, and you will see your bitcoins.
