According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

None of the above. I will be taking risks on coins that aren't as profitable for a number of reasons. To me you're better off mining the  "coins" that the crowd is ignoring and you're able to fill your bags fast before everyone comes in to crash the price.

Remember the people who made out the best on ETH are those who mined it at .30-60 a coin and were mining a crazy amount of coins per day. I'm willing to bet the profits were next to nill during that time and now they have thousands of dollars if not millions. Tons of coins out right now with good tech behind it that are under the radar that people are ignoring because profits aren't the best compared to other coins. I'll be filling my bags while everyone is focusing on the shiny object....

Also SIA will have an asic soon, so it may not be a viable option for dual mining in a few months.

Do you have a strategy to designate which coin to mine ? I am thinking just like you but I am too amateur to select a coin to mine and not shining currently.

Read the white paper - do research on the Dev team - evaluate the "promises" and if they are real world attainable given their choice of dev funding - are they a foundation/business or a group of devs - plenty of other ways to evaluate coins

Pretty much do all you can to remove the bias/emotion when deciding. I try and take a venture capital approach. If I mine 10 different coins, one of those coins are bound to catch on if I've done my due diligence correctly and will make up for the "lost profits" I incurred in the beginning. In Venture Capitol funding you pay X money to X number of startups in the hopes that at least one takes off and is where you make your money back you lost on the others.

I agree here, this is something that I've been doing for years but I try to get to these type of coins before GPU mining even hits.

For example I CPU Mined a shitload of Pascal before anyone really thought of it and many months before GPU mining hit.

The thoughts for this thread/poll was more towards established coins that can be GPU mined, generally those coins that no one is paying attention to don't immediately have GPU mining capability.

ETC is the next best safehaven for mining crypto on your GPU.

ZEC is also a tough contender.

I haven't decided which but currently I'm leaning towards ETC because it makes most sense for my non-nvidia rigs. ZEC for my Nvidia rigs and wherever I would dual mine, I would pick SIA.

When you say "non-nvidia"... you do mean "AMD" right?  I didn't know if you were looking at breaking out some ATI 3D Rage or Voodoo cards to see if they could hit 30 megahash per hour with a little bit of overclocking.Tongue

My AMD Rigs do 28-30mh each GPU with a custom bios

My Nvidia 1070 Rigs do 25MH without any overclocking but they really shine on ZEC.

I know you can push the 1070 higher for ETH/ETC but in a post ETH POW world, I would point Nvidia at ZEC and AMD at ETC as it stands right now.

I plan to keep using Nice Hash -- there are a slew of algorithms on there. Almost all of my NVidia rigs do other things besides ETH at this point.

When ETH goes POS, every coins hashrate will increase 10x.

So at the current profitability levels we will be making about $0.20/day per RX 470/480.

At that rate, you are better off just selling the GPU and go back to BTC ASIC mining.

ETC is already just as or even less profitable than eth currently, if more people mine it, it shouldn't be profitable at all unless it has a real price hike, which i'm hoping it does soon haha

I just got into ETH during last month. So I missed the party big time, however, at this moment, I am going to enjoy the ride as much I can and keep following this forum for best advice.

Current set-up:

2x 1070 + 1x 1080 rig = ZEC (thinking about switching to ZEN or LBC)

6x 580 rig = ETH + SIA (in the past mined ETH + DCR)
4x 570 = ETH + SIA

Also, I have 1x R9 290X, which I have heard can give good hashrate mining ETH + SIA, so I may add it to my 4x 570 rig. I still two more rigs to bring online this weekend, so I am way behind and hoping it is a worthwhile effort. If not, I am OK with taking a loss.

Any advice about what I should do different is welcome Smiley

My advice is to only buy more gpus with profits because soon they will be really cheap and widely available. You're paying a premium right now for the GPU's at current market pricing.

I only have one rig mining ETH - and it's already got a long-term home planned, from before it STARTED mining ETH.

R9 290 does about 29 Mh/s right now on ETH with a BIOS from TheStilt to let it overclock without thermal limiting and some undervolt, he also did R9 290x BIOSes as well.

I've never been impressed by dual mining, seems like the return is only rarely noticeably more than just mining ETH straight up and often ends up costing more in ETH than you get from the "second" coin income, especially when you factor in the HIGH electric usage (and a fair bit HIGHER when dual mining) that a R9 series card uses.
It MIGHT work out better on RX series cards as they don't use nearly as much power either way.

ppl

keep saying gpus will be cheap blaah blah, i dont see it happening , as it gets harder to mine ppl will try and add more hash I think we will have gpu shortages until march april 2018 when wth goes pos, any gpu bought now would def be paid off by then

The masses will follow the masses. ETC, Zec etc. will get a lot of miners their way.

I don't think many miners here will share their strategy openly on this forum simply because there are too many of us. Having a strategy that differs from the masses is important.

The only thing I will tell you is I quit mining ETH over a month ago and switched to ETC. People tend to blindly follow the most profitable coin regardless. Glad I did because in the past 4-5 days, it's taking me double the time to mine one ETC than it did the week before.

It's really about making a stash before the heard arrives...

I'll be filling my bags while everyone is focusing on the shiny object....

Also SIA will have an asic soon, so it may not be a viable option for dual mining in a few months.

I agree 100%. If you're mining purely for ROI I don't think you've grasped cryptocurrency entirely. You're more mining for a passive income which isn't bad but there's a huge opportunity ahead of us. We're at the very beginning of crypto, I would definitely keep mining. You never know which coin is going to blow up or how this landscape is going to look in 10 years.

I'm going to keep on mining, I won't be selling my GPU's unless I'm upgrading them to newer models. I built all my rigs so I can easily change out the GPU's with whatever I want to run GPU wise.

Almost 100% of what I'm running today has been purchased with profits from initial investments and I plan on keeping it that way.

Based on poll results it seems most have same opinion of DCR as I do, I really don't see a purpose in it other than to sell.

DOGE is Scrypt - no way ANYONE is going to GPU mine it.

ETC is too small to asorb much ETH hashrate without miner profitability collapsing entirely.

ZEC can asorb a pretty large chunk, but even THEN it's going to lose a lot of profitability.

If current trends continue though, there's gonna be quite a bit less ETH mining by the time it DOES start moving to POS - profitability is ALREADY getting close to where it was at last summer, and it looks like the rapid growth of the network hashrate is FINALLY flattening out as a result.

soon the market will be flooded with used GPU . ETH price is going down so fast .. and the smaller miners will sell as there is no profit for them .. if they mine other coins difficulty will sky rocket and still no profit for them . so it is inevitable Mr Anderson .. GPU will soon flood the market

Unless one or more of the bigger market cap coins starts price climbing again.

Also depends on your definition of "soon" - if you mean before the end of the year, it's looking likely, if you mean in the next month I doubt it.

If current price trends hold though, the mass shortages will probably go away over the course of the next month, lot fewer folks adding new machines the last few days.
