Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

Got to be careful about the software you install on a computer that has access to your bitcoins.  There are bitcoin stealing programs out there.  I suspect one of the alt coin software you installed is actually a bitcoin stealing trojan.
