I feel the proposal about AUG 1st and segwit seem technical,political and also personal among thw whales and the rich guys
what is at stake for newbie investor?
Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Your biggest risk is that whatever fiat you have (USD or INR or EUR or JPY) will become worth less every year and cost of rent, healthcare, and good education becomes unaffordable after 5 years. Good Luck.

As a newbie investor, this is actually a good time to invest with the crash in value lately. Over $600 less within few weeks. You have a lot to gain from hoarding it, forgetting about what the market and the whole scaling issue is right now. Whichever way, the bouncing back of bitcoin is going to be huge.
