I've seen on some threads people running a modified version of a gpu miner to mine for yacoin.  Anyone have any idea about this?

these "claims" are still unproven... so far VyCid has posted https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=201918.0  to mine for YAC with large hashes but you can use that in a pool since the returns for solo mine in that isn't that feasible...
