The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

I'm guessing you want to buy them with fiat (e.g. USD). You can buy Bitcoin on Coinbase and then exchange it to your favorite altcoin on any exchange. I think you can but them directly on Kraken but I never tried it...

Well almost on all exchanges. Poloniex, yobit... etc just to name a few. Some wallets like coinbase allow you to buy certain altcoins like litecoin and ethereum straight from your bank account. But most people buy altcoins using Bitcoin because that is the general concept. Most altcoins can only be bought with Bitcoin or other altcoins.

If you have bought bitcoins you can exchange them for altcoins on webpages like Shapeshift of Changelly You should know that buying dogecoins are not a good long term investment because it have unlimited supply so price tend to go down.

Yes, you can buy bitcoins and exchange them poloniex, bittrex, cryptopia, yobit, livecoin and more exchangers. For me, it is the cheapest way, because exchanging fiats to altcoins is often very expensive

With bitcoin was the beginning of successful cryptocurrencies. It is accepted in several online and offline shops, restaurants, services and more. So bitcoin is the main cryptocurrency. Altcoins are alternate coins, what means, alternate to bitcoin. Many of them like for example dash, eth, monero and litecoin succeed now also, because they are cheaper, have good background and communities and are easier to mine. And many new ones are created. Some are fun coins with no background and some come with huge projects. So its smart to watch also those ones because they can be very profitable in future.

Can someone explain what is the correlation in value between bitcoin, ethereum and other altcoins? I understood that Ethereum is more powerful than bitcoin because of smart contracts. What is the reason to have LTC, NMC, NVC and others? Why LTC is growing faster than other recently?

The simplest answer to your question is- Purchase some bitcoins with your bank account on suitable exchanges like localbitcoins, etc and then transfer your bitcoins to altcoin exchanges like yobiy, cryptopia, etc and purchase desired altcoins there with your bitcoins. If you directly wana purchase some bitcoins from your bank account then find some really good person to give you alts directly.

The easiest way is to simply just buy Bitcoins via Coinbase/Kraken/etc. That will save you alot of headaches. Then after buying just proceed to exchange the BTC for altcoins on sites like Bittrex.

It actually depends on what country you are from because you have to exchange your fiat money to bitcoins then buy altcoins through trading sites like Poloniex or Bittrex. Or you could try xapo to convert your money to bitcoin then same thing goes after, go to trading sites to buy altcoins.
