I use the Watchlist.
Every thread that I post to is automatically added to my watchlist. If I find a thread where I want to be kept updated on the conversation, but have nothing to say myself yet, I click the "watch" link at the top of the thread.
Then:
I start by clicking the "Watchlist" link at the top of the forum. With that I can see the recent updates that are most important to me. Once I've read through all of them (and responded as needed), I click the "Watchlist" link again to verify there haven't been any new updates since I started looking.
Next I click the "Newbies" forum. The threads are listed with those most recently posted to at the top. Any thread that has had a post that I haven't seen yet is bold. I scan the subject lines for any that interest me, and open each in a new tab. When I've gotten to the bottom of all the bold subject lines, I click the "mark read" link at the top of the sub-forum. This way when I return, I can tell which threads have comments that I haven't seen yet. Then I go read each of my open tabs, replying as needed and closing the tab as I finish with each thread.
From there I move on to the "Service Discussion" forum, then "Currency Exchange", "Technical Support", "Development & Technical Discussion", "Project Development", and "Bitcoin Discussion" in that order. In each case, I use the system of: scan the bold subject lines for topics that interest me, open them in a new tab, when I reach the end of the bold subject lines, click "mark read", and read through all my tabs closing each one as I finish with it.
The rest of the sub-forums don't interest me much, so I simply avoid them.
Once in a while (if I've been too busy to get to the bitcointalk forum for a few days), there are simply too many unread threads in a sub-forum (most typically the "Newbies" forum) to get through them all. In that case I'll just scan 5 or 6 pages in, and then click the "mark read" link. If anything older than that is important, hopefully is will receive a new post sometime in the future and I'll see it.
