Greetings,

I created an electrum walet some time back. I stored this wallet's password and seed, on a flash drive. A week ago the flash drive
was accidentally broken when my laptop fell from my desk....I tried to guess (the pw) for a week now but with no success...
All I can remember is that I did NOT make the password complex something simple like my username here (I tried it too).
Out of desperation, I went into the password section of electrum, hoping I could just create a new password. It didn't work, but I noticed
that there in the corner, there was a lock icon and it said that my wallet was not  encrypted. My question to you is can I possibly
retrieve my bitcoins as a result of my wallet not being encrypted??? Or is some other way I can retrieve my bitcoins???

If you can help me with this issue, I WILL make a  donation  to you!!!   I truly hope to hear from you soon!
PS, somebody suggested a bruteforce method. I have no knowledge of that. Please explain how you can help, LAYMAN terms please!

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

What device are you using electrum on? Also what version of electrum?

On the latest version installed on a PC if you go to wallet menu > password and there is no "current password" field there then that means your wallet is not encrypted. If it does ask for the current password then your wallet is encrypted.

There are two levels of encryption - secrets only and whole wallet file. With secrets only the seed and/or any imported private keys are encrypted which means you can view the wallet file but not spend from until you provide the password. With whole wallet file encryption the whole file is encrypted and you can't even view transactions or balances without decrypting it first by supplying the password. So it could be that you only have secrets only encryption.

BTW "secrets only" and "whole wallet file" encryption are not terms used in the Electrum user interface. I made those up to describe what options you have.

Simple "Layman" answer: without password or seed, your coins are gone. Undecided

You can try an engage the services of "Wallet Recovery Services"... They have a solid reputation for being trustworthy and have helped others recover their coins.

More complex "Layman" answer: to bruteforce the password you'll need to learn how to use Python  and Python scripts. You'll need to install Python and set it up, and then install and configure "btcrecover" which is a set of Python scripts which can attempt to BruteForce passwords of several types of bitcoin wallet.

Given you are asking for answers in Layman's terms... I'm guessing you are not familiar with command line tools and/or running scripts... in which case I'd suggest you either get busy on Google and start reading/learning or you contact the wallet recovery guys.

If the seed is lost, then you lost the key.

If the password is lost then you can't unlock the wallet file, if you have the file anymore.

If you still have the file, and if the password is still relatively short, then it can be bruteforced. How long was your password?

If it was over 15 characters, then you can say goodbye to the bitcoins.

Not necessarily, it all depends on the strength of the password as well. If it was a 15 character password composed of only 2-3 words, it could still likely be bruteforced. The more that is known about the password, the easier it would be to potentially recover it.

It sounds to me like your best bet would be to try to retrieve the data from the flash drive.
Unless it obliterated when your laptop fell, I would be surprised if the data couldn't be recovered.

It might not be cheap if you need to hire someone to get the data, you also need someone very trustworthy, but if you had more than 0.5btc in the wallet, it is probably worth it.

P.S.) don't use crappy passwords.

A USB drive that broke in the way you described most likely suffered mechanical damage only.  The data will still be on the flash chip.  There are skilled technicians who could unsolder the flash chip and resolder it on to another working USB drive.  That would be a worse case scenario, they may well be able to repair the flash drive without going to such extreme lengths.

If you don't believe me, go to Youtube and search for: 'repair usb drive broken' and watch the videos.

There would only be a 1/100,000 chance the actual flash chip itself was broken.
