could someone smart please ELI5 to us what the Parity hack is all about?

How does this even work? and why can it even happen?

Parity, multisig  Huh
millions of dollars stolen Huh

I thought crypto was safe. Like Bitcoin.....

There was a bug in the software and it got exploited. 

That's why you should always keep your funds in a decentralized wallet like MEW that cannot be hacked.
