Is pool mining LTC on a laptop CPU a bad idea?

Is pool mining LTC on a laptop CPU a bad idea? I know the hashrate will be incredibly low, but will it do damage to the CPU / laptop? Is it just a cooling issue or are there other factors which make this a bad idea? Many thanks

It's a bad idea. Laptops don't have the air circulation needed so it will over-heat very quickly. Also, the amount of kh/s's it generates will more than likely not be enough to even cover the electricity you've used.

...and the heat might reduce the life time of your laptop's harddrive. At least if it's not SD.

I thought as much, but just wanted to check. I don't have a desktop, so looks like I will need to save up so I can build a basic rig with proper cooling and GPU.

The largest concern with heat in a laptop is actually the long-term effects on reducing the battery's lifespan. When I mine, I take my battery out. I also manually throttle my mobile i7 to reduce the temperature. Your other big concern would be reducing the lifespan of the fan keeping the laptop cool. The actual effect on the cpu itself is mostly exaggerated but does exist in the long-term.

I would say bad idea and almost pointless, I was getting less then 20mh on a 2600k I7.

Long term its a bad idea.

Short term - if you have no other hardware available and just want to 'test' out mining for fun then I don't think it will do much damage to your laptop if you did it for a few days, or until you got better hardware. But don't expect to get much out of it. If you mined litecoin on a CPU that got 30kH/s you would make 0.34 litecoins per week for a grand total value of about $1

It's fine if you just play around.. and learning. For actual profit it's pointless... and some older laptops like to switch off now and then.

Depends on your laptop. I have an Alienware m14x with a high end i7 and top notch cooling system and when I mine my CPU hits 90 celcius (the max is 105) with the fun running max so be careful. If you have like a mac book pro don't do it.

It will help with your learning curve if you just want to play, but long term its not viable, both for the health of the lap0top and the lack of coins you will mine.

Laptops in general have cooling issues due to their small form factor, so using either a laptop's CPU or GPU would be a bad idea -- you could damage the hardware with the airflow most laptops get.

I use a Laptop for a Cpu Mining worker, I get about ~2-3kh/s from this Laptop old Pentium Duo Core. I dont have it tweaked to max hash rate to prevent over heating, I also use a laptop chiller.

Between 3 pc's and a laptop I mine at ~23khs, yes it is not much at all but Im still grinding away. If you want to mine go ahead and get started use what you have. Low hash rate shouldnt discourage you, it just takes alot longer.

I would try it only at work computer.

Because I paying both, laptop purchase & elecricity bills with hard earned money, i wouldnt try it at home.

Where i live I dont have to pay for electric its wrapped up in the rent, I know everything in life cost something. My position is that i didnt have to shell out my pay from my job to get started mining. I used what I have to start with and will hopefully be able to use my earnings to make a  earn a gpu. It will take me a long time but am willing to do so, to keep my cost low. Between rent, bills and kids I cant afford to shell out $300 Card to mine faster. It would be nice but for me its not possible. Im in the poor house and found Ltc Mining and Trading on Btc-e to be a good hobby, I dont look at it a a source of income. It will probably take me a year to make anything off it

What is your config? and what do you use to mine (cgminer, guiminer..)? am a bit curious

I was using my Windows 8 i3 laptop to do some LTC mining when I first started.  Using one of those LTC calculators, today I found that it would mine about 8 cents per day and use 11 cents a day in power.
