As with all high-return of investments, investing on cryptocurrencies are risky.  And as with all active investments in general, it is wise to never commit more money than you can afford to lose. But for me if you really want on investing or should I say trading on bitcoin or some altcoins make it wise mate don't just focus on one or two only it will end up losing some of your investment, invest on the older cryptocoins also not the new ones, the older coins are better.

Can I get the idea or reason why you think the older coins are better?

It's a good amount to start. Just follow your own decision, it much better than believe from other member pick because you could feel regret if you lose from there. Do some research and invest you can afford to lose to avoid broke and bankrupt. It's too hard to get profit from trading reguarly, remember this.

This is perhaps the right time to invest in crypto-currencies. But the risk is extremely high. At least 50% of the amount must be invested in Bitcoin. The remaining amount can be split in to two equal parts. The first part can be used for investments in the already established crypto-currencies such as Ethereum and Ripple. The second part can be used for investing in emerging crypto-currencies, such as Golem or Lisk.

Investing in altcoins is somehow risky, but you can take your time first to study the market and choose carefully the coins with highest potential to trade it. Take a good part of your amount to invest with Bitcoin itself, as it is less risky because the price is going to increase sooner or later.

If you is newbie and want investing at now, I recommend don't try invest in current!!! That is my sincere advice and I hope you not loss your money in first time, although in current still earning profit, but when nearest deathline SegWit2x, very difficult for guess the price of cryptocurrency after this event falldown or bounce.

Make your own research Sir it will help you.  Don't run with shit coin. If you want to invest first read their whitepaper and try to understand what they said.Don't invest those coin which already pumped. Also you can buy and hold bitcoin for long term.Less risk than others. If you want to buy altcoins then you can buy ANS.I believed in ANS.

That is a good amount of money to start with. You are asking for risk free trading but there is nothing risk free in that world. You can however minimise the level of risk by choosing correct coins in the market and of course the strategy too. You can divide the money you have into different coins such ripple, monero and ethereum. I'm specific about these coins because they are trustable and moving. Never put your money into single coin and that is the risk.

Which coin to invest, in your opinion  Smiley

And why ?

I am sure about the following coins and they are worth investing because the history of these coins is very good. Moreover, the volume that is being traded on these coins is best in the market. Recently, due to hype of BIP 91, the segwit2x situation everyone started moving the bitcoin into following mentioned coin just because everyone is sure about their integrity and sound position in the market.

1) Monero (for its trust)

2) Ripple ( for its amazing trading volume)

3) Ethereum ( for its sound position after bitcoin as altcoin )

Hope you will research more about them and will come to know by yourself that they are worth investing.

500$ is a decent amount to start with. if youll choose the right coins to start youll earn atleast 10-20% every week.
in my recommendation. go with 1. ETH reason: it is still in its down price i expect it to go up even 1000$ by 2018, 2. NEO (ANS), currently one of the most trending coins today basically it is called the Ethereum of China expected to go up 100$ by 2018. 3. LTC , nothing to say but a very consistent coin hold it and expect to up i personally consider it risk-less coin to hold. 4. Pillar token (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1986401.0) reason: first im holding it  Grin second it is now below ICO price once it is listed in big exchanges im 100% sure itll go up high. third the project has alot of potential Smiley  hope itll help Smiley

You have good start up investment with you and you could do that with ethereum and ripple. These coins will go up sharp after the august scenario is dispersed from the market. The bip91 is already locked so split is mostly cancelled. Taking that into consideration these coins will be invested more and more after that and thus the price will rise. :-)

If split not happen and it cancelled means 1st Bitcoin price will go up and later the altcoins will increase. So you can invest in bitcoins just wait for 5 days if the price drops you can buy $500 worth of bitcoins and hold it up to this year end you will make 100% profit. Altcoins also give you a good profit, but the risk is more to compare Bitcoin.

This is what i would do if I were starting out with $500

1. $200 into Bitcoin. This is the crypto reserve asset and would prefer to buy below $2000 if possible.

2. $200 into a portfolio of top 30 currencies from the coinmarketcap.com website with strong technologies. This might include ETH, Monero, Factom, Litecoin, NEM. The bitcointalk board can help you find the coins with the best tech. Same as my advice above, try to buy on days when they sell off if at all possible.

3. $100 into a portfolio of very high risk speculative currencies. Some people on this board call them shitcoins, but I take the more optimistic view that you only need one of them to go up 100x to make a great return. Candidates here might include coins trading below 100 sats such as Reddcoin (RDD), 1337, LINDA, Lite Doge (LDOGE), Mintcoin (MINT).

Many of these speculative currencies trade on Cryptopia which is a New Zealand based exchange.

Just search for the popular coin now that has a good value. There are so many cheap coins there and they are pumping too. Then hold it. Buy coins when it is low then sell it as easy like that. What difficult is we cant predict when does the coin will pump or it will be dump forever nobody knows it.

I would wait until you know a bit more about the ALT projects etc. IMO ETH due for a good rally and should outperform BTC.

Before you invest to the cryptocurrency make sure you have a enough knowledge to the world of cryptocurrency. It is risky but if you have a lot of knowledge for sure you can earn a lot of profit.

Edit: Capital is big enough to start investing. In terms of investment there must be a risk, but by analyzing it first will slightly reduce the risks. If I were you, the capital became three for me.1.Bitcoin 300 $: because I think this is the main crypto coin, most likely has a high profit. For long-term investment.
2.Namecoin 3.Litecoin
In addition to the price is not too expensive, these two coins are very fast to follow the price of Bitcoin.

if you already know about cryptocurrency maybe you wouldn't ask here, my suggestion is learn first about crypto and start to analyze by yourself. no need in hurry about investment if you don't know anything
