Now that I have your attention....
Powercolor Radeon HD 7970 925MHZ 3GB 5.5GBPS GDDR5 V3 DVI HDMI 2XMINIDP PCI-E Video Card.
It's on sale for $359, and I'm torn between it and another 7950

Not really sure how this question went unanswered, on a forum dedicated to mining.  Maybe the subject should be changed to some shit coin name....

link? they all look different on google results. is $360 even cheap? treat yourself to a Gigabyte GV-R795WF3-3GD and get 3 fans for less money, flash on that '43 BIOS and go up to 660 kh/s at 1087 voltage or something.

I was considering that, but, my current XFX 7950 DD, won't go above 500 KH/s. If I try to overclock, even a little, the driver crashes.

Shouldn't this belong in the "mining discussion" subforum? I don't see how this relates to altchains in any way (other than the misleading title)

well that one is probably bad luck - or needs another BIOS or whatever. You have probably already tried all permutations of drivers, SDKs, thread concurrencies etc.
My 7950s also didn't turn out that great (Sapphire OC), but at least the undervolting works decent and they are efficient enough. If I would buy 7950s again I would go for the ones posted above. I heard they are much cooler and once you flash the BIOS you can undervolt them and easily push them to 660 kh/s without lots of tuning.

Also, who knows what hassle that 7970 can give you. It seems to be rather rare and you won't find lots of mining support for it. You could just buy it and send it back if hashrate and undervolting do not suit you? That's what I would probably do if I was you
