I have the option to get 1070 Founders Edition for around 400-450€ while 580s are sold out everywhere. Does someone know if 1070 is equally good or better in terms of price/performance. Looking to build 6xGPU rig fow now.

Also, what about other coins (not ETH) and dual mining? Any cons here in regards to 1070 vs 580?

I think I heard NVIDIA cards are better for zcash mining and generally more power efficient but other than that the AMD counterparts are better for mining because most miners are implemented in opencl not in cuda.
And the Linux support is probably better on the AMD side.

I have both the sapphire nitro+ rx 580 and the Asus gtx 1070 8gb, they are both great cards for mining, but let me break out the differences i noticed so far:

-They both mine ether well but the rx580 does much better job on DUAL mining ethereum+dcr/sia : I have 30.5Mh/s eth + 850Mh/s decred on 580  while 30.5Mh/s eth + 205Mh/s on 1070.
-The gtx1070 uses less power, and mines zcash better.
-You have to bios mod the rx 580 to get a decent hash.
-You cannot bios mod the 1070 (you can't bios mod nvidia cards), but just using the MSI afterburner is enough to overclock/undervolt you nvidia cards.
-The rx580 was cheaper for me.

so as you can see, it's not really big differences between these two, so which ever you find you buy and start mining !

no, 400-450€ is too expensive, p104 mining card will be on sale soon, much cheaper.

nVidia fanboys will tell you that nVidia is better, but one should always consider the facts:

-Yes nVidia might be better at Zcash, but for the most popular coins afaik, it's more or less the same. Modding AMD polaris cards is a breeze
-nVidia are supposedly less power hungry. All I know is you can undervolt an AMD pretty hard to the point where I don't think it makes much of a difference
-nVidia will supposedly have better resell value. This might be true, but with the amount of people buying these cards, once everyone starts offloading them on the secondary market, their resell price will inevitably fall
-nVidia are more or less available while it is indeed hard to get 570/580s unless you preorder

I'll give you my honest opinion: I don't think nVidia cards have a price/performance ratio that is so great that they are a better option over AMD and I would absolutely not buy a GPU for that price. 400-450€ is about twice the price for an RX when they are available. This simply means you'll need to account for a longer ROI time. The question is: would you rather wait another month (if not more) to get a cheaper AMD card or get mining now with an expensive card. If 1070s were around 250-300 I might consider it.

I think many miners are in FOMO and will tell themselves they'd rather fork out 2000-3000€ for an nVidia rig than have nothing. I would say, don't waste your money in hardware atm, go to an exchange and buy some coins. ETH's price is falling again, might be a good time to get some.

So when do you guys anticipate 580s will be back in stock and prices return back to normal? On the other side, would waiting for this mean that there is something better by that time already out there and 580s will be getting dropped?

Many retailers already have some RX cards back in stock now that mining profitability has steeply declined.
At this point, you're better off waiting for Vega in late August, even if you do manage to buy an RX 580 now you won't get ROI until then and the difficulty will probably skyrocket again.

Nobody knows. You might be able to buy them next week just like you might be able to buy them in 3 months. I see a few retailers have some in stock but for prices ranging anywhere from 350 to 500$. Most have been saying 2-4 weeks...but it's been like that for about 8 weeks now lol. You could always find your most trusted reseller and place a pre-order if you manage to find some RX listed at their regular price in the 200-230$ range. But it's a gamble. I have a pre-order for 7 cards that's been going on for 2 months now. Not going to cancel it, but just so you know.

Vega is still an unknown. Some are available, the frontier air edition, but for about 1100$ over here. Even if you'd purchase one, I miners are not optimized for them as they use HBM2 memory and not GDDR. We'll need to wait until the gaming editions come along for some more reasonable prices from all the brands like Sapphire, MSI etc. and for people like Claymore to get their hands on them to play around.

There's also a lot of unknowns about ETH itself. POS and the diff bomb have been delayed, ICOs are wrecking the place up, Bitcoin will fork into BCC on the 1st of August...if you are already a miner you might just as well go on mining, but if you are completely new to this, I'd advise you to keep an eye on the crypto world but not get into mining unless you can build a rig for a reasonable price. Some will say ROI don't matter, I think that's a mistake.

Just my 2cts, feel free to disagree.

nvidia is better now, because of two things, amd have a clearly disadvantage because they can mine few algo very good, and on the other they are bad, also their new cards hash 30% less thant he old one on ETH, nvidia is better generally at new launched coin like signatum

How can these two cards compare on power consumption. Normally AMD cards have been more power hungry than nvidia. The more efficient card would be the better long term payout.

I've sold a bunch of AMD cards that have already made me money to get nVidia cards that aren't over-priced (GTX 1060s & 1080s [I have 15x 1070s as well that I paid 300-330 each for... but good deals no longer exist on those for the time being]... just watching Amazon every day for deals). Granted that is probably coming to an end... but the AMD cards I have sold I have sold at 1.5-2x what I paid for them.

I've made enough on the RX cards to end up replacing them with nVidia for less or equal money... the way things are going now I think the nVidia cards will make money for a longer period of time.

On Nicehash my nVidia systems work great on a ton of algos... Blake2s, Lbry, Lyra2Rev2, Nist5, X11, and of course Equihash.

My 1060/1070 rigs also do great on Dagger/Pascal or Dagger/SIA as well... and when I can sell 3x RX580s and buy 4x 1060s for less money I call it a win long-term after using the RX cards for 2 months already.

I will probably hang on to ~16-20 or so of my RX480/580 cards, though, just in case another AMD-strong coin comes along.

And for the records... I'm much more of an AMD "fanboy" (I own stock & run their CPUs in any system I build from scratch).

I know fur-mark power consumption is the same as mining. I normally used power caps when mining to keep temps low. This comparison of the different cards shows nvidia is about 20-30% more efficient than a 580.
