There are hundreds of coins, we are close to 1000 coins and I’m sure that is going to change as more and more projects and icos gets released to the public, I suggest you that you read the forum before making questions because even if bitcoin is the most popular crypto, there are many coins other than bitcoin.

Theres less than 20 real coins, the rest are clones. The best place to check for a big list of coins that have market caps, would be www.coinmarketcap.com. They keep an updated list of popular coins, some new, some old. It is a very resourceful data sheet, but operates on a 24hr period. If you want up to date coverage, their may be rss feeds available for crypto exchanges.
Your question was a bit on the broad side, but overall, this should cover your spread.

coinmarketcap.com is the right place if we want to search all list of cryptocurrencies. we can get completed data from each of the coins. if you want to paste the data in your site, then you need to copy the source then paste in your site so you don't have to visit coinmarketcap. but i think you need to asked their permission to do this.

What do you mean? other than bitcoin? We do have a lot of alt coins in the market and you are the only one to choose what you think will bring profit to you. But as given in the market only few of them are real ones that are being used by many people who are into crypto currencies, other than that they are just used for trading.

I think the OP is asking for a classification of the coins into types by one of the experienced crypto investors. Let me take a stab at doing so.

1. Platform coins - Stratis, Lisk, Nxt/Ardor, Ethereum, Omni. These allow implementation of smart contracts

2. Social Networks -AMP, Steem

3. Privacy coins  - Monero, Zcash, Zencash, Zclassic, Verge, DigitalNote, Aeon, Spectrecoin, DeepOnion

4. Exchanges - Counterparty, Blocknet, Bitbay, Waves, Bitshares

5. Currencies - LiteCoin, Dash, Feathercoin, Dogecoin

6. Content/Media Distribution - Shift, LBRY, Decent

7. High Flyers - these are low priced coins based on market cap which are deeply speculative such as 1337, LiteDoge. Linda, Netko, Acoin, Sumokoin, Pascal Lite

There are so many kind of coins. Refer here https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/ . Currently we have 1013 coins so far. And many coins would be added in the next years or months. Once they open an Ico then that would be the time where they will open their coins in the market.

If you are talking about cryptocurrency here are some. Aside from bitcoin here are some of the alternatives:

1. Litecoin- transactions confirmations are processed here more quickly than bitcoin.
2. Peercoin- is said to be using less energy and being environmental.
3. Primecoin- miners uses computers to find Cunningham chains that are sequences of prime numbers.
4. Namecoin- it was created to explore the record-keeping side of the cryptocurrency technology
5. Ripple- the difference between bitcoin and ripple is that there is no mining of Ripples.

There are equally more coins which are not even listed anywhere and there are some coins which are dead. After when ETH and Waves started allowing people to make their own tokens. There are literally thousands of coins now.

I think the OP is asking for a classification of the coins into types by one of the experienced crypto investors. Let me take a stab at doing so.

1. Platform coins - Stratis, Lisk, Nxt/Ardor, Ethereum, Omni. These allow implementation of smart contracts

2. Social Networks -AMP, Steem

3. Privacy coins  - Monero, Zcash, Zencash, Zclassic, Verge, DigitalNote, Aeon, Spectrecoin, DeepOnion

4. Exchanges - Counterparty, Blocknet, Bitbay, Waves, Bitshares

5. Currencies - LiteCoin, Dash, Feathercoin, Dogecoin

6. Content/Media Distribution - Shift, LBRY, Decent

7. High Flyers - these are low priced coins based on market cap which are deeply speculative such as 1337, LiteDoge. Linda, Netko, Acoin, Sumokoin, Pascal Lite

That's a pretty good classification of the different types of coins. It's also worth mentioning tokens which are similar to coins but run one of the blockchains and is aimed at providing smart contract based apps.

There are a lot of alternative coins right close to 1000 if not more, used for different purposes. There are even ICOs launching each and every day. Alternative coins world is getting bigger and better each and everyday, surely you are aware of what I am saying

Theres less than 20 real coins, the rest are clones. The best place to check for a big list of coins that have market caps, would be www.coinmarketcap.com. I think it is unfair to say there are only 20 coins and that the rest are clones, yes there are going to be similitudes between projects but that does not mean they are the same, just because monero and dash have privacy as their goals that does not mean they are the same project.

That is a good list! What about the payment-processing type coins, though - XRP, Stellar Lumens etc? Would these merit their own category?
Also vapourware/scam coins probably should have a category... plenty of these about!

I think the OP is asking for a classification of the coins into types by one of the experienced crypto investors. Let me take a stab at doing so.

1. Platform coins - Stratis, Lisk, Nxt/Ardor, Ethereum, Omni. These allow implementation of smart contracts

2. Social Networks -AMP, Steem

3. Privacy coins  - Monero, Zcash, Zencash, Zclassic, Verge, DigitalNote, Aeon, Spectrecoin, DeepOnion

4. Exchanges - Counterparty, Blocknet, Bitbay, Waves, Bitshares

5. Currencies - LiteCoin, Dash, Feathercoin, Dogecoin

6. Content/Media Distribution - Shift, LBRY, Decent

7. High Flyers - these are low priced coins based on market cap which are deeply speculative such as 1337, LiteDoge. Linda, Netko, Acoin, Sumokoin, Pascal Lite

Nice list there!!

Let me make an addition:

8. Shit coins - ****,****,**** (I'll let you guys figure out your own)

I'll one shot you with the Wingman from the top of Skulltown - Apex
