Nope, this is no existential question (although...). Everybody's talking about "When will Bitcoin die", but what if you die, and your family don't find your key, or don't understand it, or think it's only a useless sheet of paper with some code on it, or simply throw it away... Does this mean the currency's gone forever?

I find the possibility of this event rather realistic (yup I don't believe in eternal life), so that means that someday there might be 21M BTC but only 18M (and counting down...) is left in the market?
Yeah when you die no one could open your bitcoin waller in your acount unless you know the password or private key your bitcoin will be lost if you cant open it and will never be open again in that account obviously it will be nothing hopefully for some instace it is helping the price increase of bitcoin in the market.
The trust scores you see are subjective; they will change depending on who you have in your trust list.

I worked with someone that had lost his wallet. It was on an old computer. He had setup the mining rig and let it run. This was when you could very profitably mine.

He lost the computer and the wallet. His estimate was there was about 250BTC on there.

My thought is it's in a landfill somewhere.

I'd advise anyone that has a considerable amount of BTC and passing them down to someone is of importance, to hire a lawyer and let them handle it...meaning someone else will have your key.

For my personal holdings, I have passed on cryptic clues to family.  If they manage to crack it, great, I taught them well.  If not, a gift to my crypto brothren. HODL on.

My business, however, has a lawyer that could access it through a multi sig with other partners.

No one knows what happened to Satoshi, he may have died, he may have lost his keys or he may be waiting for a better opportunity to use them.

  • You should give your keys to someone you know and trust.
  • Write your keys in a laminated piece of paper. Put this paper in a bank and give it to your loved ones in your will, including instructions so they will use the private keys to get the Bitcoin.
  • Give to charity. Maybe they will be worth a fortune... up to $1,000,000 for one Bitcoin. You can give a Bitcoin to charity to help out the less fortunate even after you are long gone.

Hope you like these ideas. Smiley

Surely your bitcoin will be lost and will never be access again in your account or whereever you put unless they just got your private key or a password that help them to open it if not it will never be open again and your bitcoin will be lost and the supply of bitcoin is decreased.

I think that is a good question, one day we will surely die without knowing when and where it will happen. And all we can do is get ready. Preparing for everything including giving our treasure to our loved ones. But it would be a problem if the person we want to give the treasure does not know how to get it. My advice is to be honest to the person you care about, tell them what is really going on, and if it is necessary to teach them how to dilute the bitcoin you have, of course this is done only to the person you really trust. And with regard to the amount of bitcoin in circulation, of course the boards have thought about it, and I'm sure they've got the solution.

It would be nice before all that happened better than now teach the children, our wives.
So they know how to take money from bitcoin.
In order to prevent the loss of money is wasted.

It is not as easy as you think, you could teach them how to do it, but there is not a guarantee they remember it and even if they do how are you going to communicate your private key or your seed, if you do not then the money is lost and if you do then they could as easily spend the money since they have the keys to spend it.

Yes, the coins are most likely irretrievable forever. That's why plans regarding coin recovery in these situations have been greatly discussed in the forums. And yes, when mining ends there will be less than the total of coins circulating.

Maybe so if it dies, can not fix the existing coin. Can the forum be able to improve in this situation.

Can't you just leave the retrieval key code in safety deposit box/ entrusted with lawyer via will?

My core wallet has a clone hdd in a safety box.

I may also put a trezor in the box.

Actually, I’m not dying yet, and I don’t pray I do so. We all hope to live long right? OK. But, to answer the question “what happens if you die”, well, your Bitcoin continues with its journey. But, if it happens that your children has access to it, then they can start making use of it.

If you die, it is either you go to heaven or you go to hell! Lol. Then yous Bitcoin will remain forever in your online wallet (unless it declares bankruptcy) or in your hard wallet. I don't know if it will be gone forever but as long as Bitcoin exist, maybe your Bitcoin is safe in your wallet.

For me if we die we also lose all of what we have here on earth including what we invested here in bitcoin, but we make some moves before that day come to every on of us because we don't know when will we off on these planet.
I already told my wife about my bitcoin account including keys and she must also know on how to get this account.

Well, I have a piggy bank where I put some little persent of all my earnings for the case when Bitcoin's price will breake all predicted records. But I doubt my parents will know how to withdraw this money. I have husband who is also in all that with crypto-currencies, so he is the only person who will be able to hold those coins in the case of my death. Add to that I don't hide logins and passwords, so it is not going to be hard to him.

For me personally, I have not thought of that way, maybe it's because I'm still a beginner and still learning stage. About what will happen between bitcoin and our fate later on, I think it would be nice if we introduce and teach bitcoin to our nearest It's our wife or child. Give them confidence to hold the key and our password. That way, the possibility of missing bitcoin is small.

That's the best thing you can do for  today.I usually put some of my earnings in a bank while others are kept stored in my wallet. My husband knew bitcoin already but he's not really into it so i'm planning to make him a bitcoiner also so he can have an access to my bitcoin account.I'm planning also put a list of my earnings in a memory card with all its stuff so i can give them security even though i'm gone already.

When I die, before that happens I will teach my children to manage my bitcoin. And I've done that to the right to continue my bitcoin that has been running.

Grin that is good idea to save the bitcoins before we die and making our bitcoins never lose forever, but the problem on the dead men there are no peoples around the world who know when will be die, there are no acurate sign about the dead will some people, the best time to teach our children is now because we are still alive.
