Today I got 5 direct messages from brand new accounts asking me some random money/bitcoin related question and asking me to click on some fake google link.

Has the forum been overrun by bots sending these out to everyone?

Report the messages by clicking the button in the bottom-right and you'll be part of the solution.
There have always been bots and phishing attempts, you only just notice them now because of selection bias. Just report and move on, don't think about it too much.
