The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

This is a good move on the part of Russia's National Settlement Depository and this alone can be a big boost for cryptocurrency movement in Russia as this can create a big push for the adoption and utilization of Bitcoin and other cryptos. That is, if Russia would not instead choose to have their own cryptocurrency and obliged all to only work with it...having a myopic and self-centered view of the cryptocurrency trend.

I understand that there are still many legal hurdles work with but I think the Russian (even if Putin is a dictator) is now open for the blockchain technology and even looking for ways how to take advantage of the said new innovation. I think it is also helping that USA is not really pushing and very supportive of Bitcoin otherwise it might dissuade Putin to do otherwise.
