Gambling is run by mobsters... regardless of whether or not they are employed by the government. Does anyone think that this is simply a case of some anti competitiveness in the gambling area?

Probably not. Auditing/disconnecting Mt. Gox is a way to foster business for American Bitcoin companies, exchanges, and cash to BTC services. Some cutthroat business tactics here.

I had the same thoughts.   I'm not sure if I believe it but it crossed my mind.

I speak for American Bitcoin companies when I say - it's nothing personal, it's just business.

And who tells the Maryland gambling commission what to do?

Nah.  This isn't about gambling - but it makes a nice cover.
