Is it possible?
They have done this for merely file sharing sites.
If they wanted to, couldn't they just seize Mtgox.com if they really got desperate in their moves against the largest bitcoin exchange?

Mod edit: Adjusted Title

You would think by now mtgox would have made an official statement regarding coinlab lawsuit and not to mention the more recent DHS account seizure.

They should get a .co.jp domain name

Before somebody else registers it !

Market reactions based on inaccurate data only prolongs the amount of time it takes to return to stability. This helps no-one, except those intentionally misleading others to profit.  To each his own, but unregulated market or not, that's not how I prefer to make my bitcoins.

What if we woke up tomorrow morning and Mtgox.com was GONE?
Notice posted from Department of Homeland Security claiming Mtgox.com was sized by US authorities???
Nobody would be able to get their money or bitcoins out at that moment onward.
That would be a real bummer for many people.

Don't say I didn't warn you all. It could happen at ANYTIME!
Especially now that they have gone after the Dwolla account of Mtgox.
It's not fear mongering, it's common sense.

The point is people will read this thread title and think it has happened.

Even with the word "possible" I read the thread title and thought something just happened and that the US was trying to shut down mt.gox.

wake up calls can be a necessary reality. Sorry to spook people, but it's something to consider. I believe it could happen real soon.
Nothing is in the way to stop the US from doing this to them. It could happen in 5 minutes, or 5 hours or 5 days from now.

Who doesn't?
But what I posted would cause the price to rise, while people buy, in order to get out of Gox with their bitcoins.
Now that dwolla is unavailable, many people want to buy, because they cannot get their money out very easily.
Your suspicion is unfounded.
I have buys in a low prices and buys in at high ones, too. If it dips, I buy, if it gains, I sell. I'm not partial to the bear or the bull.

Gox would just instantly establish itself on another domain that could not be seized by the US. If ownership is not stupid, they are already ready for that.

Eh, not necessarily. Country-code TLD appears shitty and untrustworthy to many unfamiliar with the situation IMO.

I have to think that Gox has planned for some contingencies.... it's just a mystery which ones!

answer me this
.com is essentially "owned" by the USA, it falls under their jurisdiction. The same way .co.uk does in the UK , .ie - Ireland, .jp -  Japan.
Although they can't shut down a website if it is hosted in a different country, they can say that because the don't like site "X" they are taking back "their" .com domain name.

When they do this, they are basically grasping at straws in order to try and prevent people visiting the website. In never works as people can simply use the IP address the domain points to, the host can simply switch to another TLD (such as .co.uk, .me).

1.  Not gonna happen.
2.  Even if it did, it is super easy to route around the damage.
3.   Saying that a domain seizure would make everybody lose funds is indeed spreading FUD since clearly loss of a DNS record is not as big of a deal as you seem to think.

i don't understand how usa could seize a site that's not even in the usa???

answer me this
.com is essentially "owned" by the USA, it falls under their jurisdiction.

In never works as people can simply use the IP address the domain points to, the host can simply switch to another TLD (such as .co.uk, .me).

or .bit

oh lol thats pretty interesting i never knew usa owns "com"  what the the "m" stand for murica?

"The domain was originally administered by the United States Department of Defense, but is today operated by Verisign, and remains under ultimate jurisdiction of US law.[2][3][4] Verisign Registrations in com are processed via registrars accredited by ICANN. The registry accepts internationalized domain names."  --wikipedia

com stands for commercial btw.

Is it possible?

Yes.

You would think by now mtgox would have made an official statement regarding coinlab lawsuit and not to mention the more recent DHS account seizure.

Agreed, it is very concerning that they have said nothing.  It is also very odd that they haven't even disabled the Dwolla withdraw option.

PANIC BUY i say. Grin

How Ripple Rips you: "The founders of Ripple Labs created 100 billion XRP at Ripple's inception. No more can be created according to the rules of the Ripple protocol. Of the 100 billion created, 20 billion XRP were retained by the creators, seeders, venture capital companies and other founders. The remaining 80 billion were given to Ripple Labs. Ripple Labs intends to distribute and sell 55 of that 80 billion XRP to users and strategic partners. Ripple Labs also had a giveaway of under 200 million XRP (0.002% of all XRP) via World Community Grid that was later discontinued.[29] Ripple Labs will retain the remaining 25 billion"
