I used to use Bitinstant to mt. Gox and then fun, fun, fun; however now mt gox looks like it's being DDOSd and Bitinstant's options have changed. Virwox? What the hell? Do I have to be a wizard for this? I just want to buy some coin. Can somebody point me in the right direction? I have been buying coin for over a year now with Bitinstant at Wal-Mart, etc with no problems. I assume this has something to do with the government and I'm really pissed!!!

thanks very much

Yes, you have to be a wizard. That's the price of being able to buy Bitcoins now, while they're still inexpensive.

I've used   https://localbitcoins.com/    before.  Just do small transfers if the person doesn't have any positive reviews...  Then work up to larger numbers when you feel comfortable.

How about any of the many other exchanges out there? There's more than just MtGox you know.

I can highly recommend Bitstamp, just do an international wire transfer to their bank account, and buy some coins. They're pretty fast (way faster than MtGox anyway) with handling bank transfers.

Id recommend Bitinstant at this time because its pretty clear that Coinbase is working with the Feds - i.e., all their data is provided to DHS, FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS...

Thats how they secured another round of venture capital - $5M I believe. They bent over for Uncle Sam to keep the doors open.

Yeah, I think localbitcoins.com is key. People often say Bitcoin exchanges are the weakest link since they can be targeted to some degree, but person to person transfers will always exist.

My bank charges $30 for international wire transfer -- any recommendations on banks with less fee?

That's about right for international wire.  If you have a large balance at the bank or have been a customer for a very long time, some branch managers will waive the fee if you ask.  I've gotten domestic wire and bank cashier's check fees waived by holding a moderate balance in my account.

This is bad news indeed.  Can you give us more info on this?

I'm not happy with bitinstant - they STICK it to you with hidden fees greater than their initial fee by giving you a LOUSY price point on the dollar to bitcoin exchange rate WAY outside the trading range.
