Though I am new to cryptocurrency, there is undoubtedly more than a plethora of news, information, whitepapers and documents to browse through, analyze, and subsequently make decisions on in combination with one's own logical/speculative reasoning. Obviously, this learning curve can be quite intimidating to newbies like myself who start at rock bottom.

- In this manner, I would like to get an all-around understanding (a "crash course") in the world of cryptocurrency, such as the roles and functions of transactions and mining, jargon, et cetera. If you don't want to explain yourself (which you probably don't), links (perhaps with a brief description) to good good reads/educational material are perfectly acceptable and helpful.
- What are your favorite resources and how do you reason through them in a time-effective manner?
- How do you make decisions based off of what you read and what you reason?

All input is highly valued and appreciated.

Hmmm...hard to make a general recommendation without knowing your background.

Have you ever read the basic ideas behind cryptocurencies?

Might start with Wikipedia, if you aren't already up to speed on the basics.

Here's a good list of Bitcoin resources that covers pretty much every aspect of it: https://sites.google.com/site/bitcoinsig/resources

I'm currently unsatisfied with the quality of crypto journalism, but this site is the best source of news and analytics in my opinion: https://www.coindesk.com/

When you'll feel like you are having a good understanding of Bitcoin, you can start reading blogs and mailing list of Bitcoin devs, Technical discussion board, github, BIPs, etc.

I suggest you start with this first: http://immutable.today/10-mistakes-bitcoin-newbies/

It basically discusses some of the things you should first know before delving into the world of Bitcoin. There are a lot of blogs out there similar to this, which discusses the basics and must-knows on cryptocurrency and Bitcoin so I suggest you search for those. Also try checking out the 'Beginners & Help' section of this forum. There are some pinned threads there that gives some basic information on Bitcoin. I mostly just rely on the information found here on this forum.

I wish you all the luck on your plight for information.

Reading news alone about cryptocurrency do not improve your knowledge until you are unaware of fundamentals and cypto technology.
Here goes a whole topic to help beginners understanding http://www.coinapex.com/bitcoin-guide/beginners
This topic will also teach you how to start accepting, transferring bitcoins. Same procedure applies for altcoins.

first decide what you want to learn! because your question is a bit vague in my opinion. you say "news" then want to learn about "functions of transactions and mining" whatever that means.

there are two separate topics:
1. the technical stuff:
which are things like what is mining how does it work, how does bitcoin work, the cryptography and a lot more.
for these check out the developers documentation or bitcoin wiki
https://bitcoin.org/en/developer-guide#transactions
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/

2. the economical stuff:
which is everything price and trading related. for this there are some good articles on investopedia and you can specifically search for bitcoin on tradingview.com and read some stuff there with charts and analysis from other people.

and news is not a source in my opinion, not for bitcoin. most of the bitcoin news sites like cryptocoinnews are full of shit instead of good articles worth reading.

The first thing you should do is watch this video, which I saw DannyHamilton share a while ago.  Very good beginner's information on how crypto works and why it's secure.

- What are your favorite resources
Bitcoin Wiki, Coindesk and here are my main ones.  There are plenty of other valid sources, but you will find that things you read here or on Reddit are often annoyingly biased and/or unhelpful.  I said here because it's a good gauge of public interest and public opinion and it's good for understanding things as long as you're capable of critical thinking.
and how do you reason through them in a time-effective manner?
If you're a reasonable person, there's no advice to give.

You need to be very careful where you get your info as there is lots of propaganda in this community by people who just want to scam you.
I personally recommend https://reddit.com/r/Bitcoin as most people give their honest opinions.
Otherwise, search this forum for posts by trusted members and read Wikipedia articles related to Bitcoin.
Put a $100 onto an exchange and practice with it to get used to trading and some experience.
All of this should help you learn about Bitcoin... at least enough to know how it works.

There are a myriad of choice when you start out with Bitcoin, but you have to filter the good from the bad. It took me quite

some time to sort between the options to find biased media sources.  https://www.youtube.com/user/WorldCryptoNetwork

has some good material, if you want to have a look at that. It takes time, but you should compare info from different sources

and find the similarities to verify it's authenticity.  Roll Eyes

Sorry but that is impossible you are basically asking for the decision process people go through in order to reach a conclusion about what they read and you are trying to get insight to replicate that, but the only way to do that is to be an expert in the subject, you need to read a lot and understand crypto if you do not then you are never going to be able to do what you are describing in your post.

I was once new like you, but I didn't even go to anyone for help. Everything I know about bitcoin today, I learnt them all by myself, by visiting some trusted sites for Bitcoin news. One of the websites I normally visit is www.coindesk.com. they explain everything you need to know about Bitcoin, and even go as far as to teach about altcoins like Ethereum. So check it out.
This is the thing at some point we were all new in this world of crypto and it can be difficult for a newbie to get all the information that he needs, but to be honest my favorite website to keep myself updated of the information of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is bitcointalk, when I see a new thread or a post with info that I did not know I immediately dig the information and see for myself this new info.

Bitcointalk is the best because here you can find some really good experts and you can check their opinion for free. We all know here that people are paying money for good articles, good reviews, that can all be a big lie, here on bitcointalk sometimes you need to be not lazy and to read a lot to find what is good that is true, due lot of spam comments, but when you find it its better information then any other you can find online.
I read many news on different sites, I`m active on couple more places, but I agree that this place is best place if you be informed on time and informed good.
