I am looking for some advice and recommendations on how to increase my local areas involvement with bitcoins. Are there any good avenues to promote bitcoin, besides a bumper sticker on my car or getting a vanity license plate? Also, does anyone have any experience with selling on https://localbitcoins.com/ ? Thanks! |

The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

I don't have any personal experience but I have heard a lot of very good things in addition to a horror story or 2. Locally perhaps you could advertise/sell/promote on craigslist, etc. I have seen ads on there from diff. areas where people are trying to help people learn/adapt to bitcoin. There are also those local newspapers(like the ones given away in chinese food shops) that are cheap to advertise in. Word of mouth is always good, perhaps meetup.com, good luck.

Thanks for the ideas. I didnt even think of advertising in the local papers or craigslist. What were the horror stories you have heard about? |

I buy and sell BTC all the time. All face-to-face transactions in a coffee shop (or anywhere there is a free WiFi). I advertise on https://localbitcoins.com and http://craigslist.orgMet a lot of nice people. All good trades. Works for me. |

I bought some coins on localbitcoin by bank transfer - almost the same price as on mtgox (probably cheaper if you count all the fees for currency conversion etc.)
Buying in person seems much more expensive for some reason - not sure why though. Anyone any idea?

I've done many local transactions with individuals who've found me through localbitcoins.com.
I've only had a potential problem once, and it was fortunately resolved quickly.
I generally offer to sell at 1% below MtGox Ask and to buy at 1% over MtGox Bid.

Time will tell, if governments shut down Mt. Gox etc.
For instance check the Bitcoin24 case.
I think that LocalBitcoins is a great site, especially the possibility to have face to face transactions without 3rd parties who might fuck you buy forcing you to pay their exorbitant charges.
In addition to that, it's better for your privacy etc., since you're not required to ID yourself.
