With the news about Gmail being able to send payments to another person's Google Wallet,  would you consider this a positive development for BitCoin or a negative?  Could we eventually expect to be able to exchange BitCoin USD to Google Wallet money which would be easier to withdraw?  Could this possibly compete with the idea of Bitcoins , send money to anyone, anywhere?

I look forward to your thoughts.

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

I think its all down to trading value with value (eg: USD/BTC for food) and the more services that allow this to happen and that make it easier for it to happen the better. I know that it will effect the price of the bitcoins in some ways (more than likely negatively unless bitcoin is one of the currencies accepted) but looking at the bigger picture, this is a good thing.

I saw this article today about Google Wallet:

http://money.msn.com/gen-x/article.aspx?post=9243b771-ab14-409f-b896-59a3103fb7fc

I would think that it would be smart for Google to use Bitcoin.  It is secure and there are less fees than paypal.  It does not seem like they are trying to integrate anything with Bitcoin yet though.  I wonder if they are at least talking about it?

Mike Hearn works for Google and is very active with Bitcoin: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mike_Hearn

I believe Google has even allowed him to work on Bitcoin full time as an employee. I know I've heard this from at least two sources but can't remember exactly where.

Still around.

I know I heard about this here on the forum but can't remember from whom either.

How are we standing now with this? It would be very useful for many users and Coinbase would have more competition...

I think Google wallet is more to do with competing against Paypal;

That said, since BTC can be so trackable, and we know how much Google loves gaining extra info, it wouldn't be surprising if they added BTC support at some point... That shouldn't be something that any of us look forward to, though...

Oh really? So which online searching engine are you using? Bing? Google is a company, of course they want to make more money - that is their primary goal but helping people are big part of their strategy as well. While it is true that google wallet is meant to primarily be a competitor of Paypal I am sure that sooner or later we will see bitcoin integrated in in as well.

Google already released a couple open source projects (Android os being the crown jewel here) so it would not be so surprising if they do it with their wallet. But from the other hand google might be afraid of potential hacking threat.

It's a great thing! Google wallet is a payment or transaction channel, Bitcoin is the currency.
