The creator of the +100M users streaming platform will shake the video distributing industry by developing a new platform, called Flixxo. Relying on unlicensed videos since its inception, Popcorn Time has found on smart contracts the right technology for shifting to legit content and building up a sustainable business model.

Flixxo is a decentralized network for content distribution, based on Bittorrent protocol. Instead of leaning on high infrastructural costs in bandwidth and storage space - like other video platforms such as Netflix or YouTube - Flixxo gets rid of centralized servers by incentivizing its users to actively become distributors (or “seeders”), rewarding them on Flixx token. Flixx are needed in order to watch new videos.

On Flixxo every author uploads his work to the network and chooses the revenue model: how much Flixx it would cost to watch his content and which percentage of its earnings will be shared with the distributors. The more they share, the more incentives for the network to distribute and make a video go viral. If a user ran out of credits, he can also give some seconds of his attention to sponsored content in exchange of Flixx. This structure creates an organic market, as advertirsers need to buy Flixx from content creators in order to showcase their sponsored content.

How do you compare with LBRY ?

We don´t see Netflix or Youtube as competitors... we envision that social networks will turn into social economies by giving a real value to "likes" (as no one ever ran out of likes, they cannot have a value) Social engagement and participation is required to earn such a value. Of course we rely on video content, and at some point we might become competitors of those two giants, but we aim on building up a social economy. Maybe our closest competitors right now are social networks (Facebook is starting to produce its own video content!)

About a new account making the ANN, we all been working on Bitcoin and blockchain for the last years, but we haven´t been around this space. Adrián Garelik was the head of communication and co-founder of RSK, but yet he managed RSK Bitcointalk account and not his own. So we decided to start from scratch with a new account.

Although we have a similar approach and LBRY has a potentially great product, we have several differences.

The main difference is that we turn every user into a distributor, and they earn a % of what is paid to the author. Author set a price and a % to be shared with the network on a distribution smart contract. Also, users can ask for "sponsored content" (AD) if they ran out of credits. There is AD in our platform, but anyone can choose whether to watch it or not. This sets an organic price for FLX tokens, and creates a market for FLX outside the platform. We aim on creating a participating community, a social economy, not just a video platform.

We don´t have our own blockchain, we been testing our platform on top of Ethereum and RSK. FLX is not mineable, but there is an incentive program that will run for 5-10 years and will decrease on time. Not having our own blockchain turns into a better UX as final user don´t have to download it. Flixxo can be used on smartphones, TV´s and computers.

On the team side, we have the expertise of having developed Popcorn Time, RSK and Riecoin.
