Can someone explain why this would save peoples lives? I don't understand. I believe its a bold statement to make. People make crashes. Yes you can reduce that. But why does this need to be on the blockchain? I dont see the point.

As far I understood, the aim is to create a decentralized ledger where one can track documents circulation like a pilot's or a technician's license. Forged documents could result in staff's incompetence or even carelessness. In the end it could lead to aviation accidents and deaths of hundreds of passengers. The mission of the project is raising the level of security in the aviation sphere.
