Nvidia CEO: Cryptocurrencies Are 'Here to Stay'

Nvidia is riding high on the boom in cryptocurrency mining, according to the graphics card (GPU) manufacturer.

Revealed yesterday, the California-based company's second-quarter earnings were up 56 percent year over year, with its GPU division taking in $1.9 billion during the second quarter – a rise of 59 percent compared to the same period in 2016.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang struck a bullish tone about the prospects for selling to would-be miners, telling VentureBeat:

Quote
"Cryptocurrency and blockchain are here to stay. Over time, it will become quite large. It is very clear that new currencies will come to market. It’s clear the GPU is fantastic at cryptography. The GPU is really quite well positioned."

I'm sure he'd like them to stay. He earned millions thanks to GPU mining, so he's sure to praise his golden goose.
I like and share his opinion, although those GPU rigs are usually dedicated to mining shitcoins and other pump and dump projects. I'm curious about the CEO's opinion on this matter.

people still mine with GPUssss?Huh??

Of course, people are mining ETH and ETC, monero, zcash and other smaller projects.

Obviously, there is just one reason for GPU manufacturers to be bullish on crypto, and that's because of how they stimulate their sales significantly. If you look at how the prices of brand new GPU's have increased (almost doubled in some cases), and how the older (used) models are maintaining their value exceptionally well, it just shows that the crypto market isn't a joke anymore. As long as crypto keeps pushing forward, there is no doubt about this GPU hype to last for a longer while.

There are lots of problems with GPU mining for GPU manufacturers. The demand is very unpredictable, when altcoins rise, miners will buyout all GPU stocks and leave nothing left for gamers, when alts crash, mines will sell used GPU's or even RMA them, both resulting in losses for GPU manufacturers. This volatility of GPU market is causing some gamers to switch to consoles, and there's no simple way to fix it, because specialized GPU's for mining might be unattractive, since you can resell them to gamers. The best way for GPU manufacturers would be to start producing ASICs, but it's also a very risky investment, especially considering the uncertain and unpredictable legal status of cryptocurrencies.

Exactly. GPU manufactures will logically praise the crypto market because it gave me a new boost and sale of their GPU's. I guess not only Nvidia but a lot of their competitors are already producing GPU's in great numbers and should be their no. 1 selling products. This will definitely last because crypto market is still young and mining using GPU's are also evolving. We may see those companies in few years from now making specific GPU's just for mining alone separate from GPU's for gamers. And I'm pretty sure that their R&D are would be busy finding ways to improved their products to cater crypto market in general.

Almost all mined cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin are mined with GPUs.  ASICs are starting to develop for Scrypt coins too, but still altcoins are mostly for GPUs.

BTC provides an unparalleled security due to the vast amounts of money and computing power dedicated to securing the chain and the inability for 51% attacks to affect other users' coins.  Major altcoins are also extremely secure.

The more equipment gets bought, the more secure cryptocurrencies become, so I'm all for it.  But the sheer amount of economic value that would get wasted if they were used regularly really does raise questions about how viable they would be for mainstream use.

Well, that is a very self-serving comment actually but then who can argue with the man when he has sales figures under his belt to boast, right? As long as there is a demand for his product then he will be making a good business with cryptocurrency. The world of alts is also very big and serving with the miners of these coins can be so lucrative. It is the time for Nvidia to really shine!
