Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

There are lots of exchanges you can use them. The rates and fees are almost the same in all of them.

Yes. Better to use bittrex.
Shapeshift pay some fees for sending your coins. So it is reasonable that you buy coins in shapeshift more expensive than exchanges.

Shape shift is just convenient, but all they do is act as a third-party for you. You can do the same for less with an exchange.

Poloniex and bittrex has some good fee, I'm not aware of shapeshift. Poloniex has from 0.15% - 0.25% the fees depending how you place the order and when. Bittrex as far as I know has 0.25% standard but you have to check also the price on both exchanges at the time you want to trade as it may be a little bit different and if the amount of bitcoin is high then you will notice the difference.

Yes, I can recommend those exchanges as I am using those. It is also convenient and at the same there are many coins to chose and trade. Or I may add Liqui. So, far I can they are reliable based on my experience.

Shapeshift just exchange site and that was not a trading site, you must understand about the different behind the exchange site only and trading sites.
You made a wrong way to trade your amount in the shapeshift. Just use it to convert your amount into the fiat or something that related to the shapeshift's service.
