I noticed that my windows 7 box CPU works really hard when I run guiminer with poclbm, and my ubuntu is really quiet on CPU front, is it to be expected?  Does anyone know why?

Do you have two or more GPUs in a Crossfire configuration, if so that may be the culprit in Windows, Linux does not care about Crossifre as it sees multiple cards as separate GPUs. If yo replace the Crossfire connector with a dummy plug on the second video card the CPU load should generally drop, but sometimes even with a dummy it remains higher, so do try it if you are using Crossfire.

Bloodys could be correct, but if you still need help after looking into the crossfire issue, please post your computer setup, and I can help you troubleshoot.
