Go and look through the drives looking for a bitcoin wallet such as armory or electrum. thats the easy bit, if there is a wallet on their the hard bit is opening it without the password.

Search the entire computer for "wallet.dat" file. That is what you need if they were mining using Bitcoin QT/Core. Good Luck!

Do not use the hard drive. hook it up as an external device, and use an external program to copy the entire disk first. then go ahead and try to retrieve any deleted data from there.

If he had a wallet on there, the dat file may still be there, look here C:\Users\yourpcname\AppData\Local.Enable show hidden folders.

Just download the bitcoin wallet and let it load a few blocks and shut it down,go back to that location and paste/replace the dat file in the bitcoin folder and fire up the wallet. It will take awhile and about 40-50 gigs of HDD space, but when it is done downloading, you will see if there is any bitcoin in the wallet........it may be encrypted,if so only the guy with the password can get to it.

nice situation, you might have some btc on there. Unfortunately, unless they left the private keys unencrypted, it's pretty much going to be impossible to recover.

You could, of course, ask the owner if the btc is still on there. It does belong to him, right?

You can try the methods people above me have already given you but I doubt there will be bitcoin on it. Of the brother has had his bitcoin still available in the following years it's very likely he has taken them of and sold them perhaps in 2013. If you don't find anything you can also just ask the lad.
