So what do you guys think the best GPU for money is? I am looking to get 1 and then expand my rig as time passes. What would be best to start with?

I saw some nice FPGA units that hash six times more than a GPU at only twice the price.

There is only lancelot delivering from blackarrow at price 350$ for 400MH/s  26Watts power draw. The delivery time are pretty good.

Ebay.

I could be totally off on my stats, but I was just trying to make the point that there are other things to mine with besides GPUs... and he was specifically talking about "for the money".

For the money, I would take a look at the gpu mining bitcoin wiki, and decide where you stand.

One thing to also pay attention to is brands and models.  Look for good deals, and lots of good info on here on brands that have had good luck.

Word. Just bought a couple 7950s to replace my 5970s. For some reason 5970s are worth more on eBay than I paid for them last fall! 7950s, however, will depreciate far less when GPU mining dies down and the market is flooded with two-year-old 5970s.

Ok ok. I suppose you are technically correct in terms of bang-for-buck Wink I'm more a stickler for the extra hashes I can pull out of a 7970.

A 7950 is the better value decision.

5970, 5870, 7870xt(tahiti le), 7950, 7970, 7990 (for space).

i prefer 7870xt tahiti and 7950 for price and low power usage.

it also matters which brand...i prefer sapphire.

7950 for LTC

Do not buy a card for BTC mining - Avalon Batch 2/3 and ASICMiner will make you regret it unless you're only buying one to game/work on.

A Sapphire 7950 is $300 from Amazon, and in addition you get 3 games and a $20 rebate. You can OC that card to 1180 on air without upping the voltage. That's around 600 Mh/s for $280. Much better deal than most anything you can buy easily right now, including FPGA and ASIC. And you can resell it when you're done with it.

What is the best 7970? If you google 7970 you will see a lot of them.

Don't buy any of the 5xxx series, they'll be worth jack when they're not useful for bitcoin mining

The best deals right now are on 7790 and 7850 cards.  7870 too, I suppose, I'm just not a fan

example: 7850 on newegg right now you can get for $125.  sell the games coupon for $20-25, down to $100-$105.  they sell for about $140-$150 used on ebay

(re: 7950s, there have been several deals on these in the $260'ish range in the last few weeks.   give it a few more weeks and they'll be worth buying.  only buy 7950 and 7970 if you like to watch equipment depreciate in value quickly)
