Do you have any recommendations as to a cheap and/or free hardware wallet? Something I can store on my PC? How do I buy more through this wallet once my coins are in it, and what would you consider the best place to buy bitcoin?

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Well, I am not using hardware wallet and I am not sure whether there is a free one or all of them should be purchased, but I am using desktop wallet which is electrum. There are many features of this wallet such as sign in message or export private keys, and you can download through electrum.org
Here some recommendations; https://www.buybitcoinworldwide.com/wallets/

The best place to buy bitcoin depend on your country, where do you live and is there any local exchange there?
Someone who live in Japan will buy bitcoin in BitFlyer
People in South Korean will buy bitcoin in Bithumb or Coinone
People in China will buy bitcoin in BTCC or OKCoin
People in US may buy bitcoin in Gdax or Bitstamp

Personally I have a TREZOR which I think is excellent.  It costs $100 but you don't just have to use it as a BTC wallet - you can use it for 2FA and as a password manager too.

Unfortunately I can't think of any hardware wallets that are particularly cheap.  There used to be a Ledger wallet which cost 30 Euros or something, but they don't have it anymore and I would personally avoid getting second hand hardware wallets.

The Ledger Nano S is interesting too, but it costs €69 and is currently out of stock until September.  So you would have to be prepared to wait.

- If you want to buy hardware wallet for your bitcoin you can buy trezor or ledger wallet.
- But if you want it to be free than just print out paper wallet from offline printer and laminate it to store bitcoin for long term.
- There are many exchange platforms that can be trusted and the best one for you depend upon your country. Coinbase, kraken and bitstamp are few of such trading platforms to buy bitcoin

I don't understand your question, do you need desktop or hardware wallet. For desktop wallet, I can recommend Electrum. And there are some popular hardware wallets like Trezor ($89) Ledger Nano S ($70).
If you need places to buy bitcoins, I recommend to small research to see, which exchanges are mostly used by people in your country. In this way, you can choose best option.

Maybe ledger HW.1 could be, what you look for. With 23$ the cheapest, I found. Have no experience with it but has good raitings.

A word of advice from me, if you will have an interesting offer when someone will give you free hardware wallet - better ditch that proposal instantly.
Never, absolutely never use somebody else's hardware wallet, it could be specially tinkered and manipulated, which is not that hard to do.
Hardware wallets are not that great anyway, most people will be fine with good software wallet installed on their mobile device with multiple copies of private keys stored safely.

the only free wallet that you can have and be sure that it is 100% safe is a paper wallet. if you don't want to pay just go with paper, it is not hard to create and it is not hard to secure. make backup(s) from it and then move your coins there. you can always add more to its balance each time you buy more bitcoin. but when you spend from it just make sure to create a new one and transfer your coins to that new paper wallet.

you can use bitaddress for it.

You are misunderstanding a software wallet as hardware wallet.
Hardware wallet stays outside of your PC as a different hardware.
If you want a software wallet try jaxx or Electrum.
If you want a cheap hardware wallet, you can store a portable version of software in a cheap usb.

If you really want a cheap then just use your old PC or whatever. Just factory reset your Operating System first to ensure that there are no viruses about, and check if the hard drive is in order. Make sure that it's not too old that random failures can occur. Once you generate your wallet make sure you never ever enable internet access until the time you need to access your bitcoin.

Anyways, i'd suggest getting a ledger if you can afford it.

It is slightly less expensive than a trezor, and it is really worth it imo. Not only will you get security, you'll also like the fact htat you do not need to create a new paper wallet/cold storage wallet every time you need to access your coin. And it's just as secure as trezors, imo.

HW.1 has been discontinued by ledger(3-4 months ago i think).

Hardware wallets costs like ~$100(a good one). hardware wallet is a must if you're going to buy large sum of bitcoins.
