High fan-speed with new batch Antminer S9s

Hi guys.

I've recently bought some Antminer S9s for a small mining rig. I have a total of 5 * S9s, bought original from Bitmain.com.

The problem I have is that the first batch I received have almost a constant fan-speed (3000-3800 RPM), while the second batch I ordered all have a lot higher fan-speed (5000 - 6000 RPM) and a high-pitch noise that is quite uncomfortable to listen to.

Anyone know how to fix this? I know the firmware is different (5th of May vs. 12th of July) on the two batches, maybe there's something there? Anyway, I have a cool room with fans/aircon to keep the temperature down, so 3-4K RPM should be more than enough to keep the miners cool.

I belive part of the problem is the later batches of S9 have fewer chips total running faster, and hence hotter, for the same hashrate. Probably can't do much other than put them somewhere such that the noise is mitigated. I host mine.

Hmm, but the two orders I have is under two weeks apart. First one was 23th of May 2017, and second one 5th of June 2017. Has the HW changed that much in such short amount of time?

Does the GUI for the different miners report the same number of chips per board? Don't have my latest s9 (batch 25) here at home but a batch-3 has 63 per board and we know they lowered the chip count at least once in the following  batches.

You guys are giving out bad information.

The s9 has always had 63 chips per board for a total of 189.

The t9 has a reduced chip count at 57 chips per board for a total of 171.

Any more tips guys? Could it be related to the different firmware? Any configs/logs to check via SSH?

One of my S9s actually rattles when shaken.  Turns out the hash board moves side to side when you wiggle the connector.   The heatsink is connected just fine, but that board runs slightly hotter and gives WAY more HW errors than the others.   When you think about it though, the mass production of these miners in China - it's amazing there aren't more issues.

I am having exact the same problem I think. Got my first S9 and was scared how fucking loud it got. Not only the normal fan noise, it is also some kind of whistle that is incredible loud, that you hear it in the whole building (even if there are multiple walls in between).

The RPM of one fan is at 4800 and the other at 5800. So this seems quite high, right?

Does anyone have an idea what I could do to fix that?

The speeds and noise are NORMAL for the s9. They are very densely packed and fans like that are what is required to remove the heat produced. Ja the siren effect is highly annoying but that is the nature of these beasts and has been documented here since they first came out last year.

These are industrial machines - what did you expect?
Search the hardware section and you will find various ways folks have played with to reduce the sound.

Und perhaps next time before buying somethings expensive - research it. The heat and noise issues of miners has been a constant topic here since at least 2015.....

As I recall, the fan on the S9 is rated for 5800 RPM at full speed.
It's NOT the high end of that Delta series (which is a 6800 RPM model as I recall rated for 250 CFM or so) but one step down from the top.

That cant be right. I seen it go to 6000 RPM many times now.

they sometimes use a fan that goes to 6200 rpm it is not a delta

my s9 runs usually at about 4000+ rpm. yesterday all of a sudden, one of the fans in a machine starting picking speed all the way up to 8400. it is still at that speed although the temperature of all chips is well below 70/65.

why is this fans still runnign at such a high speed. is there possibility that there is something wrong but its not showi

There are ways to set the fan to a static speed where you might not have noise. Also if your blowing air at the units it can cause high pitched sounds as well. Some people will put filters on their units if they whistle/sing which can reduce the noise. There really is no cure, your unit will most likely sound this way its whole life but you can manage it somewhat just be careful and more about it. There is probably a few threads on the subject already. Good luck!
