Blockchain is a new technology that potentially has a game-changing impact on the way we fight climate change. It could allow us to work together and bypass big energy companies, as well as reward those who have met climate goals.
BLOCKCHAIN’S INTERPERSONAL CAPABILITIES

Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize almost any industry it is applied to: we can take comfort that it can be used to ensure food gets to Syrian refugees, will soon experience the mountain of data it will give us on driverless cars, and could have the ability to rebalance the exploitive music industry. One of its most exciting implications, though, is to help combat the climate change that humans have caused over recent centuries.

According to We Forum, blockchain‘s key property in fighting climate change is its decentralized nature, which enables interconnection between the human “swarm.”

Climate change is a fundamentally international problem, and a major difficulty in tackling it is navigating the web of different languages and regulations between countries. Blockchain provides a solution by cutting out middlemen and bureaucracy, providing a way for individuals to have interpersonal relationships that can be the beginning of a bottom-up solution, rather than politicians dictating from the top-down after lengthy and often inefficient political communication.

An example is the recent and successful trial of a blockchain based microgrid that allowed individuals to share renewable energy with one another in New York.

BLOCKCHAIN’S OTHER BENEFITS

This application of blockchain to climate change is one of many potential uses of the technology — and the others that have been proposed are just as ingenious.

Perhaps most promisingly is that blockchain could also allow us to have much cleaner information. Currently, emissions data is frequently fiddled with, inadvertently laden with mistakes, or incorrectly taken in the first place.

Blockchain data cannot be changed when it is in the network, meaning that — coupled with the internet of things — we could receive totally secure information from machines, devices, or producers that could not be tampered with, intentionally or unintentionally. This is would allow for a much better diagnosis, which could lead to a more targeted prognosis — in which those responsible could be disciplined and those who are helping are rewarded.

The need to fight climate change is becoming ever more pressing, with apocalyptic predictions being made frequently by reputed individuals like Stephen Hawking. Therefore, we should use any means we can to make positive changes towards tackling emissions, whether it be blockchain, radical new ways of producing energy, or using new technology to clean our air.

In a practical way, blockchain can help fight climate change because through online transactions,we won't need to produce paper bills and contracts which actually contributes to deforestation. Also, blockchain can help fund projects and campaigns to help reduce climate change.

Cutting down on the use of paper definitely would make a huge difference. I've been receiving my bank bills via SMS for years now and they just sent me a message saying they'll finally stop sending me paper bills and just send the more detailed bill on my email add.

And yes, bitcoin can be used to send donations much more cheaply with no paper used. Since the price is growing, you can send NGOs some sastoshis and they can hold part of that for their maintenance.

This is the silliest idea i've read all day :p
cutting down the paper money production would not make a big difference in any way, it would be innoticiable.

Climate change can't be stopped, it's about 99.999999% natural, and has been taking place since the dawn of time. Climate change FUDsters frequently know zero about actual climate science.

The idea is good, but in practically it wont give big impact to stoping climate except it become major use

What do you mean by major use? I guess blockchain can not stop climate change because climate change not only affected by computer technology

When you put it that way it sounds very reasonable and seems like with using blockchain we could save the world and solve all our problems. But in real life that wouldn't be that easy. How to make companies and societies to massive use blockchain technology and how to ensure that it become dominant? Otherwise it wouldn't make much of an impact.

Right. The same could be said for the internet too. The internet has the power to stop climate change, but guess what people do not use it to stop climate change but rather update their Facebook status or post on Bitcointalk. Smiley

I am sure that just like any other industry or concern, the blockchain technology can be of big benefits in fighting the ill-effects of climate change. A great example will be data sharing and collaboration between many sources and people so that they are always updated and innovations and good ideas can easily be shared. I believe in making this world a better place although I believe that there are also those who are using dubious methods and conclusions just to make their imposed beliefs on climate change get fortified. Data on climate change should be based on science and not altered facts to suit someone's position. I am hoping that with the use the blockchain technology the real truths can be ferreted out.

Just a critic regarding the OP, it is lacking some direct approach of blockchain in order to stop climate change. Aside from making it more easy to interact or raise funds like as what you said, it is talking how blockchain can indirectly help in stopping climate change greatly. Lets's take for an example, a more direct answer for blockchain technology:

In a practical way, blockchain can help fight climate change because through online transactions,we won't need to produce paper bills and contracts which actually contributes to deforestation. Also, blockchain can help fund projects and campaigns to help reduce climate change.

A way to minimize the use of paper money which is made by cutting down some trees is an example of a direct answer. Well, obviously this fact still doesn't contain enough impact. Next timen if you make something like this thread, you should balance it out from macro to micro details, from indirect and direct answers, and from least to the best solution it can offer.

EDIT: Oh! I see. You are planning to lauch a "climatecoin" so you better make a better impression next time and convince people more as to how great the impact will your project bring to stop climate change. Your post, as I said, is lacking.

Totally agree. And I can't understand how "totally secure information" can stop climate change? Not only computers are the reason for climate changes.

I agree with you sir, it can contribute to prevent climate change but not as big enough to stop. Its very hard for us to realize what's going on outside, and some of us doesn't care about climate change . It may stop if everyone will help also it depend on us,bitcoin may help because of its characteristic paper less transaction but definitely it won't stop climate change.

In a sense the less fiat money we print the lesser paper the lesser the trees being cut. Also with the use of cryptocurrency people will no longer go to banks to withdraw and to institutions to pay this means a lesser fuel consumption and less carbon dioxide to go to the atmosphere. But its effects are only subtle since people are still using plastic, burning fuels and producing products from factory that produces toxic air into the atmosphere. The only way we can stop global warming is by way of using electricity in cars and place filters on the factory and plant more trees.

Blockchain is just technology. It can maybe increase efficiencies of back office operations. But unless you have leaders of this world backing protection of this world and taking concrete steps, it won't make much difference.

I do not think that blockchain is the answer to stopping Climate Change.  Remember the only permanent in this world is change.  It is a universal law so I think there is no technology or invention that could ever make people to control nature events.  Aside from that even with the lesser need to cut tress for paper, population is ever growing, places like forest and other lands will be occupied by people in search for the place to live in.

Lol no way on earth that’s going to happen, bitcoin mining consumes a lot of power, power which is generated by probably hydrothermal or nuclear. If nuclear leaks or explodes we all know whats going to happen the only clean source is solar

Is the climate even changing? I mean seriously... every year the seasons come and go at the same times. Nothing changes!

ROFL

That is the climate changing, more colloquially referred to as "the weather" (but you knew that, good satire, Barrel Cheesy)

The only thing the climate change theorists get wrong is the attribution ("anthropogenic climate change", lol), and the magnitude of the outcome ("pay the Breathing Tax, or it's the end of the world!!!")

Strange how people whose business it is to predict the end of the world never seem to go out of business  Grin
