In Poloniex trade ticks (that is, ticks filling up the "trade history" table) I occasionally observe buys cheaper than the lowest ask rate and/or sells more expensive than the highest bid rate displayed in the orders table. Does anyone have an idea on why these bid/ask rates are not transmitted as order ticks? I suspect certain bid/ask orders first get paired in the system and end up being streamed just as a trade tick, without any observable bid/ask order tick.

let me tell you something about poloniex,
back then it's the best exchanger in my opinion, everything is very good and i am totally satisfied with their services,
but, something strange happened when they closed troll boxes,
when they did that,i encountered many people complained about their account or deposit/withdrawal process.
from the start i don't want to believe it,he/she might be a troller hired by someone or whatever.
but,in the next day i found another one that have an issue but he/she has a different issue from the first one.
and after that many people keep complaining about their account,
so i recommend you to not doing trade in there,i am afraid that they will 'take' your money with reason aka problem.

they can change their rules and terms as their wish,so something like that was not a big deal for them

Maybe those are high frequency trading bots making very quick bids then immediately cancels them in less than a second. You will notice them come out when the market becomes very volatile.

There are quite controversial experiences with Poloniex, some good, some bad. The fact that their fees are based on a relatively low percentage (15%) of the profit makes Poloniex a more approachable alternative. Nevertheless, what is your alternative to Poloniex then? (As you might notice, I need a decent almost real-time ticker with a programmer friendly API.)

Are you implying that those bids/asks get paired in the system and end up streamed as a "trade" rather than a bid/ask order? Even if they would have happened in the blink of a second, I would still expect to see their footprints in the order ticks. Otherwise, ticks are nothing more than an aggregated high-level view of streaming orders, of which, I think, totally contradicts with the notion of a "tick".

That sounds like something is fishy. Lately Poloniex has been encountering various problems andmany people have complained them about their issues.
Poloniex was a good exchange platform once but has turned into a crappy one now. I prfer Bittrex over Poloniex and recommend the same to everybody. It has a various list of coins with three markets and huge marketcap. It has a smooth interface and hence becomes a better platform for trading. Its better to stay away from sites like polo when you hear incidents like these that give you goosebumps.

I don't know how exactly poloniex works but it is easy to have buys that are lower than the lowest ask and sells that are higher than the highest bid. You just create your own order and when it gets filled it will obviously be better than if you just dumped one coin for the other.

But yes, i've heard that poloniex have been extremely dodgy especially in recent days. I've even got one of my own withdrawals held up by them but eventually it went through after ~a week.

Why would they do this though? Having a false last price does not affect the actual trading that users do...
