Altcoin Questions?

Okay so here I go... I made an altcoin a couple of weeks ago and only just got it to work now. Currently I have 4 virtual machines running the client... they are all connected to each other but every time I try to open a client without the -addnode command, it does not connect for some reason, like to any of the other clients I have running in the virtual machines. So here are my questions:

How can I make the client connect without having to type the -addnode command after the program?
and
I am fairly new to mining coins so... How do I mine my coin?

I never said I wanted to release it... its a fun thing among friends. Me and my friends like developing programs for fun... we each try and one-up each other and this could actually be useful for us... Like for settling bets and stuff... like the sort of play cash you used to play with when you were a kid.
